  1. Since some of the threads were getting a bit long, I thought I'd start a new one. I've ordered the
    21 speed Dual Drive which should arrive within two weeks. My question - what are you guys doing
    about the back support to stop sweating? I will probably go this weekend to a recumbent store and
    buy some seat making material to use over the plastic seats that come with the Revive. What have you
    guys done re that?

    Also, some models have a built in odometer which does not appear to be correctly set for the size of
    the wheel. Did any of you receive literature with your bike re the settings of that odometer ... and
    what numbers did you use?

    Apart from a few washers under the nose of the seat, have you guys made any other changes? I'm
    planning to level the piece of metal above the rear wheel so a bike bag will sit properly.

  2. Hi Dave!

    I bet you're "itching" with anticipation by now;-) You know, yesterday while riding the bike, I
    thought to myself how would one resolve the issue with the lower back sweat because of the vinyl
    backrest. Well I don't know the answer. To me it's not a big deal as I live in Florida and one
    sweats regardless;-) I do believe that a future "edition" of the Revive could incorporate a mesh
    back instead of the small backrest. The seat bottom is great and very comfortable so I wouldn't
    mess with that unless they widened it by a couple of inches. It wouldn't do any harm. But a mesh
    back would be an improvement I think if offered as an option. Let us know how the seat material
    works for you.

    My model doesn't come with the built in cyclometer. You can have your dealer calibrate it for you
    just like an after market cyclometer.

    As for the rack, your idea of adding a flat piece for a bike bag sounds like it would work. Keep in
    mind that the owner of the shop where I got my Revive told me that Giant will be making a rack bag
    that is shaped to fit in that area though I don't know how long before it's available if it ever. I
    sure want one;-)

  3. Edward, I've seen the factory bag ... it's a wedge and is more cosmetic than functional IMO. As I've
    mentioned in another thread, my current bike bag can hold two 12 bottle cases of beer, one on each
    side; that's a bike bag. The bag I saw from Giant looks like it would hold a chicken salad sandwich
    and a can of Coke. OK, perhaps it can hold more, but if the rear end of the bike were parallel to
    the ground, anyone could use _any_ bag.

    I'm hoping they will improve the back support in the future and make the improvement easily
    adaptible to the current models. As of yet, Giant has still not responed to any of the e-mails or
    faxes I have sent.

  4. Congrats on the Revive21. Can't wait to hear about it . If you can send me a photo of you and the
    bike I will add it to the upcoming Revive owners page. About the back rest, my back sweats a little,
    but not much for it to bother me. The bike did come with literature and settings on how to set the
    computer My bike dealer set it for me. But I will look for the numbers for you. The bag shelve works
    fine for my bag. I use a small bag just to keep my keys and wallet in. Also, some of my Revivedx.com
    bumper stickers. Maybe if we get enough Revive users we can start a new group just for Revive users.

  5. Regarding multi speed drives... has anyone else found the existing 7 speed hub on the US version of
    the DX geared too high.

    My wife and I went to a shop to buy the DX model (based in some large degree on the raves we've been
    seeing here), but a quick test ride up some fairly gentle grades left us wishing the chain ring were
    a bit smaller.

    Thanks to the patience of the shop owner, Dave, (whose shop floor tiles were 12" x 12"😉 we were able
    to determine the bike travels about 10 ft with each crank rotation in the lowest setting "1".

    To put this in perspective, we returned home and determined that our Raven 3000 travels about 4.8 ft
    with each crank rotation in the lowest setting.

    So can any find out if Giant will address this soon with a smaller chain ring or more speeds
    in the hub?

    I must admit that I find the claim of the DX traveling 10 feet for one revolution of the crank in
    the "1" position on the shifter hard to believe. That's about 120 gear inches which many bikes even
    with 27 speeds don't have as their highest gear. Now let's put that in perspective with my Revive
    which is the 8 speed model. In the lowest setting, it will travel approximately 34.5 inches or less
    than 3 feet per crank revolution and in the highest...69 inches or 5 feet 9 inches which is
    curiously my height. So you see, that figure of 10 feet per crank revolution is somewhat unrealistic
    even though I do agree that the DX may be a tad overgeared for hill climbing.

  7. I find that sometimes an empirical approach works better than a theoretical one for these kinds of
    determinations.

    Would you be willing to go out in the garage and actually measure how far the bike travels for one
    crank revolution?

    Or maybe, lift the back of your DX, and count how many revolutions the wheel makes for one
    crank revolution and multiply that 20" and that by three to see approximately how far the bike
    would travel?

    Please let me know what you find... cause if it actually turns out to be the 34" you calculated,
    that would be way better than my Raven (theoretically 52.85"😉 in its lowest gear setting (22 tooth
    front, 34 tooth rear) and would certainly fulfill our needs for the worst of hills around this part
    of the world... 🙂

    You make good points. Last night I did actually get on the bike and it was in first gear and pedaled
    it in front of my house and observed how far it traveled with each crank revolution. I appeared to
    move forward about 3 feet or so with each revolution of the crank which supports my previous
    statements about the gain ratio on my Revive in it's lowest gear. By the way, I have the standard
    Revive not the DX. Mine uses a traditional derailluer drivetrain with an 8 speed cogset (13-26
    teeth) and a 48 tooth chainring using 170 mm cranks.

    Sheldon Brown has an excellent online gear ratio calculator where you can input all the variables
    including crank length to get a pretty accurate picture of the gear ratios on a specific setup. Not
    only can you calculate the results in "gain ratios" or "gear inches" but how fast the bike will be
    traveling by the cadence. The later are fixed values like "60 rpm", "80 rpm", etc. Sorry I don't
    have the direct link for this gear ratio calculator but if you do a search on Google such as
    "Sheldon Brown Gear Ratio Calculator" or something like that, you should get results which will
    point you where to go.

    I'll take your word for what you've said so far. Everything I've posted on this subject are just my
    personal observations and nothing else;-)

    only fun to ride but comfortable as well. I don't really care about gear revolutions. Take the bike
    for a test ride, I'm sure you dealer won't mind! If your having a good time and it's fun to ride.
    That's all that really matters. There are 100's of bikes out there to buy.Find the one you will have
    fun riding and your ride it more. The bike in the garage with the perfect gear revolution will still

  11. Derek, thanks! The several bikes I rode here were not correctly set from the factory and the speed
    indicated was much faster than I thought I was going. From what I also understand, the dealer was
    not given a manual on how to set the odometer, but I could be wrong about that. I rode several
    models from several dealers and the speed was incorrectly on all of them.

    Thanks again for the info. My wife and I will probably be in Paris for five of six days for a short
    vacation when the bike arrives and I hope to bring it along.

    In fact, that's exactly what got us going on the RX... my wife instantly decided this was a bike she
    could be happy riding... no grease from the chain (so no ankle bands and you can carry it *inside*
    the SUV), no tricky shift mechanisms, extremely comfortable seating compared with a standard config
    bike, safer to ride cause you can look around more easily, etc, etc.

    But when we actually did ride the matching blue/silver DXs (that we went to the shop expecting to
    buy and take home with us) for a couple of miles (thanks to the courtesy of Dave, the owner of a
    super shop in the neighborhood) we found that riding up grades presented a bit of a problem because
    of the relatively high gearing at the lowest setting (which, when we returned to the store, we
    measured to be roughly 10 ft of bike travel for each 360 degree revolution of the crank).

    With the exception of this one fault, we both loved "our" RXs, and would have ridden them home, but
    for the gentle 400 foot hill between the shop and our house.

    Hence our original question in this thread: does anyone here have a way to find out if there is (or
    soon will be) a Giant mod to fix this for the non-athlete riders this bike is obviously targeted to
    appeal to?

    Either a smaller chain ring, and/or a wider range hub would do... cause we both think this is an
    ideal bike for us otherwise, and we have bunch of our friends who feel the same... that this was
    (excluding the gearing) an excellent design innovation from the engineers at Giant!

    mentioned, and if you correctly plug in his sprocket ratios at the low end you get 116" of bike

  15. Hello, all.
    Well I tried to measure today and it was a bit hard doing it buy myself.
    But when I went up hill, traveling in first gear. It was just about 2 meters per rev.
    Now this will be plus or minus.
    I found when going up really steep hills that seemed a bit lower and when you just move(or push) the bike (backward) on level ground it seems to move about 2.7 meters.
    So to get a really good measurment I think you need to ride up a steep hill and have someone mark it.
    Depending on the incline of the hill my one rev. would change.
    Maybe it was just me. I will look into more.

    to ride. The technical stuff can move by the wayside;-)

    Well I see that you did correct my name in your post from "Dave" to "Ed" in. However I'm still under
    the impression that you feel my gear ratio calculations are "off". Am I correct? I went to the
    website with the gear calculator and I plugged in the following values:

    Wheel Size 20 X 1.75/44-406 BMX Crank Length 170mm Gear units Gear inches Chainrings 48 Stock
    Cassette 8-speed "V" 13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26

    And here is the result I got back:

    Gear chart using Gear Inches For 20 X 1.75 / 44-406 / BMX tire with 170 mm cranks With 8-speed "V"
    13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26 Cassette 48 13 69.0
    7.7 % 14 64.0

    So in gear "1" on my shifter I am in the 26 tooth size cog and it will yield a forward movement of
    34.5 inches for each revolution of the crank. That's well under 1 meter...in fact under 1 yard (3
    feet) even. On the other end in 8th gear, the bike will use the 13 tooth cog and move forward 69
    inches for each revolution of the crank which I had humourously mentioned in my other post is
    equivilent to my height. These are real numbers.

    Now on to your real concern. The first Revive I test rode was a DX. I did casually mention to the
    bike shop employee that I thought first gear may be a little on the high side even though that
    really doesn't matter here in Orlando which is relatively flat. He told me that fitting a smaller
    chainring is not an issue. The DX uses a 48 tooth chainring just like my standard Revive. Maybe a 40
    or 42 tooth chainring would be better.

    If there are no other issues with the DX, I firmly believe the both of you will love this bike. Like
    Derek mentioned, it is fun and very comfortable to ride and stylist to boot;-)

  17. We've got nearly 30 miles on our dx. I've ridden it up hills in and around Port Townsend. I have to
    pick and choose my routes like I did when I reviewed the Giant HalfWay or any other 1, 3,4, 6, 7, 8
    or 9 speed bike. The gearing could be a tad lower.

    Giant has done an excellent job with this bike. It's very refined and should be very popular. The 21
    speed DualDrive and LaFree electric versions will be the icing on the cake. Giant took a big chance
    and should be congratulated. This bike gets a lot of attention. We had it out and about town today
    at the Kinetic Race and it got as much, if not more attention than our BiGHA test bike.

    Would you be willing to help me understand why simple rules of mechanics don't seem to apply to your
    model of the wonderful, innovative (in my opinion, anyway) Revive bike... <grin>

    If your front (chain ring) sprocket has 48 teeth, and your rear (cassette) sprocket has 26 teeth,
    and you rotate the chain ring one full revolution, the rear sprocket will rotate almost two times
    (48/26 = 1.85).

    And since the rear wheel is directly attached to the rear sprocket it must also rotate almost two
    times for each chain ring (crank) revolution.

    So if your tire is nominally 20" in diameter, the bike should roll almost 63" for every single
    revolution of the tire... and for almost two revolutions of the tire, the bike should roll almost 10
    ft! ( 9.67 ft. to be exact)... just like the DX we measured in Dave's shop yesterday.

    So how is it that your bike only rolls 34" for every rotation of the chain ring (crank)... did you
    *actually* try this experiment? <grin>

    [14 friends and neighbors are on line and eagerly awaiting the answer to this mystery]... 🙂)

    PS: when Dave (shop owner here) called Giant tech services to ask about the smaller chain ring, the
    person he reached said there were none available since the chain ring was riveted to the crank
    assembly??... and since we *really* want to buy and enjoy these two DXs, we are hoping somebody
    here at a/r/b/r has a better connection to Giant engineering and can assure us a fix is in the
    works for this otherwise splendid machine.

    So in gear "1" on my shifter I am in the 26 tooth size cog and it will yield a forward movement of
    34.5 inches for each revolution of the crank. That's well under 1 meter...in fact under 1 yard (3
    feet) even. On the other end in 8th gear, the bike will use the 13 tooth cog and move forward 69
    inches for each revolution of the crank which I had humourously mentioned in my other post is
    equivilent to my height. These are real numbers.

    Now on to your real concern. The first Revive I test rode was a DX. I did casually mention to the
    bike shop employee that I thought first gear may be a little on the high side even though that
    really doesn't matter here in Orlando which is relatively flat. He told me that fitting a smaller
    chainring is not an issue. The DX uses a 48 tooth chainring just like my standard Revive. Maybe a
    40 or 42 tooth chainring would be better.

    If there are no other issues with the DX, I firmly believe the both of you will love this bike.
    Like Derek mentioned, it is fun and very comfortable to ride and stylist to boot;-)

    Ed has worked out the gear development inches and has assumed that it relates directly to distance
    travelled per revolution which it does not, understanding gear inches as relates to distance
    travelled is difficult to grasp so leave him alone, I notice you failed to point out that the
    development figure for the given wheel size and gear teeth was near identical to Eds travel figure.

    You have the first part of the equation right by dividing the size of the sprocket (chainring) by
    the rear cog. The second part is multiplying that result by the diameter, not the circunference of
    the tire. Also, the 406 20 inch tire is not nominally 20 inches exact. It is more like 18.7-18.8
    inches. So using the result from the first part of the mathmatical operation which is 1.85 and
    multiplying by 18.7 (the true diameter) will give you 34.59 gear inches. Very close to the 34.5 from
    the online calculator. Remember there is another variable and that's crank length. This is just a
    "rough" way to quickly find out an approximate gear ratio given specific values such as chainring,
    cog and tire size.

    Remember that I did observe how much I rolled ahead with each crank revolution last night on my
    Revive and it seemed like 3 feet or so...less than the length of the bike. A ratio of 2 meters
    developed or so is quite high for a first gear though some of those single speed beach cruisers are
    close. Maybe the DX is geared that way, I don't know. I can tell you how my bike is geared;-) I do
    believe that there is an explanation of gain ratios, gear inches, etc. on Sheldon's site.

    I didn't know that the chainring is riveted to the crank assembly. Tomorrow morning I am going to
    take a close look at mine.
