So I'm watching the coverage of the Tour as it runs up and down the Champs Elysee here, and I wonder about something: from the overhead camera, you can see that they do a U-turn about 100 yards before the roundabout that surrounds the Arc de Triomphe.
Why don't they run the laps a little further so they do the turn around the roundabout? Not that they need the extra turning radius or anything, but I would have thought it was conceptually irresistible. Woudl the traffic just be too disrupted?
Also, anyone have a Gmaps route of the lap section or the final stage?

The Charles de Gaulle-Etoile roundabout has 12 major roads coming into it. The traffic situation would be a serious problem if it were blocked.

I'd guess for traffic. It's bad enouogh as it is, but Etoile (Arc de Triomphe) is probably THE major traffic intersection in Paris. Although I sumppose they could have the race enter the roundabout, circle it on the inside, and exit back down the Champs, using only the inner half of the roundabout, leaving 11 of the 12 routes open to traffic.

No. It wouldn't be a roundabout, but it wouldn't be completely blocked either. But I'm showing my geographical bias. Based on my travel patterns, I don't think I've ever had the need to stay in the round-point past the Champs.

Not to mention that it wouldn't seem quite respectiful to the Arc de Triomphe to use it as a turning mark.
