  1. After prising my eyes open to watch the last few riders they showed
crossing the finish line on L'Alpe d'Huez (doh!) I was forced to
consider the last thing my eyes had absorbed before they closed, that
f*&$ing Avanti ad. (That'll teach me to recline, just breifly, on that
oh so seductive item of furniture in the lounge, The Couch of Sleep)

Quite simply, I hate it. If I had at all considered buying what looks
like a Dura-Ace (from what I can make out in the scratchy, washed-out,
needlessly-mirrored rotating visuals that they have used) equipped bike
before this, then it would have put me off an Avanti good and proper.

Funny thing is, I know that they are OK bikes, at the top end, at
least. But are any of the pros riding them? No. Can you look at the
specs on the website? No. (Not when I visited it, anyway). "There's
gotta be more" WTF? Who did the sub Nine Inch Nails/Rammstein vocals?
Annoying, disconcerting, meant to be subliminal? Who cares. It just
    grates.

What a disaster. I hope they sack their publicists, web designers, ad
agency bottom feeders and SBS marketeers (now that you know your
brownie point stocks are going up in the world - putting MORE of this
s&*% onto a once-great TV channel, is there a Faustian pact being made
here: More ads soon, more Tour coverage now?) in one fell swoop when
they realised the cringeingly awful job they've done, for this little
black duck, anyway. That's how good brands go down the crapper -
spending maxi moolah on bad advertising.

Oh, and whilst I'm on my soapbox, that 'Skins' ad is getting a bit
annoying too, now that the novelty of its arty pretensions has worn
off. The Macquarie Bank ad with that smug f&*%er with the big boomerang
(if ever there was a lame attempt at a "Look at my big penis" double
entendre by the paid representatives of the Millionaire's Club, then
there it is) was always a non-starter. What is it with the
    frustrated-film-school-graduate-making-ads black and white faux-retro
    coolness, anyway?

Thoughts on the substance of this late night rant of mine, anyone?

Only one - we should be really grateful that anyone is willing to buy ad
space (the road cycling TV audience here must be pretty small) so that
SBS can justify screening the Tour to its accountants. Who cares if they're
[censored]? They're ads, and you have a remote control, a bladder to empty and
    snacks to fetch.

On a completely unrelated topic, I was very unimpressed that Boonen
abandoned, AFAIK just because he's a bad climber and wasn't going to
win green. What a prima donna - they should do their best, and try not to
get eliminated on time by catching the "bus". It's the Tour de France, for
    Christ's sake!

I think you need more sleep! [img]cyclingforums.comtongue.gif[/img]

Nah, I'm over those ads in a big way - the Avanti ad in no way tempts me to even consider an Avanti bike. I can practically recite both versions of the Skins ad in my sleep. Feel the same way you do about the Macquarie Bank ads.

The Renault ad was entertaining the first 50 times I saw but is getting pretty old now. However, what I really want to know is - what is the song they play in the background as they "crashtest" the food?

  5. but then again who would consider laying down $4000+ on a Willier/Bianci/Colgnargo with Durace over [comparivitively] cheaper Avanti/Giant/Leersport if they weren't seen on the tele being ridden by alot of weight weeners.

It's all advertising, some of it happens during the telecast & some of it happens in the ad breaks.

As far as I'm concerned, apart from componentry, bike (frame) brand names mean nothing in cycling.
T-Mobile are not at a disadvantage riding Giants compared to Lampre or CSC who ride more 'exotic' marks, & neither are you.

Indeed -- one of the Colnago time trial bikes used in the tour is a
rebadged Giant, complete with small Giant logo on the chainstay.

Mind you, there's still the question of geometry...

CSC's Cervelo's, the Colnagos etc are no more exotic than Giant, they
come out of the same factories in Chaiwan.

But I'll tell you something for free, there *is* a difference between
frames/forks and it can be significant. If you've ridden a lot of
different roadies, you'll be able to tell the difference, assuming your
ride consists of more than just a brief tootle along a flat road at low
speed anyway 🙂 The differences aren't generally huge though, and most
roadies are bought for the pretty paintjob and [censored] factor rather than
how well they ride, and most road riders never take the bikes to their
limits anyway. Sometimes, even in a brief tootle, you can tell. Flexy
forks for example (most low end Giants, Inexas etc).

And a number of the Giants in t-mobile aren't. Ullrich never rode a
    Giant TT bike, for example.

Seen the bianchi bike under Backsted? (prior to his DNF ...)

Cippolini, Petacci, Kursipu etc etc etc. I certainly wouldn't have
called Boonen a prima donna, he's won Roubaix, remember?

Yes, the time trial seems to be the place to play spot-the-disguise. But
the Colnago/Giant was the first time I've seen a bike with both brands
    clearly identified.

He withdrew after consulting with the doctor. It was reported on cycling
news as breathing difficulties that left him unable to continue. Could of
course have been a rationalisation, or he could have developed bronchitis.
Not something I can rule on without giving him a medical exam.

But I don't think Boonen would pull out just because McKewan had him beaten
for the Green and there were a few hills, he is no Petrachi (though he had
a good excuse for not riding the mountains this year).

There was a lovely nasty letter to Cyclingnews after Cipo was in the team
car for Liquigas. Basically saying it was the first time he'd ever been
seen on the tour after the first mountain stage.

What, so Alessandro writes sonnets too? He's a real Renaissance dude
;-) All sprinters are big pussies, IMHO. Few little bumps, gets them
    all narky and teary . . .

Could be, but what's she singing? Something about baguettes? BTW,
riding to work this morning through Port Melbourne (the trendy bit) I
saw a dude walking along in a black turtleneck, AND beret with a
BAGUETTE (french stick, for all youse philistines ;-) )under his arm!
The only downer was that it was wrapped in that bakery plastic, so not
an authentic 'produit de M./Mme. Boulanger, je regrette'. I checked to
see if I was on the singlespeed with stripy skivvy and handlebar
moustache. I must have shaved that morning.
