    I never knew my spokes distorted and took this much stress! Is this why some
    people break spokes a lot? Because they do not use spokes that are, I guess
    for lack of a more educated word, elastic enough (metallurgy wise..)

    Is this why more wheels are starting to use those funky non-metal types of
    spokes??

    They sprint so hard they make the ground blur!
    The camera shutter moves at and with the speed of the lead rider not the
    wheels. Since the spokes are traveling at a different speed than the
    riders they appear distorted. Or something like that.

    The classic of all classic examples, obtainable with an old style focal
    plane shutter (where the shutter paints light across the film, when
    combined with panning can cause some cool [censored])

    Amazing isn't it. Even at lower levels of the sport the stresses are
    huge -- this is from a cat 4 race my club put on this past Saturday:

    Not the same phenomenon. The bicycle wheels are not
    distorted in the same way. The finish line camera takes
    one pixel wide photographs of the finish line many time a
    second. The composite image is a graph of the finish line
    over time where each vertical stripe of pixels has a clock
    time associated with it.

    relativity. At high speeds, time slows down and apparent distance
    increases. The spokes are traveling much faster than the rider, so due
    to relativistic effects, they much travel through a longer distance and
    appear warped to a stationary viewer.

    So what's the best way as viewers to reduce the warp effect - run fast
    or sit on our thumbs and rotate?
