I am new to this group, and know very little about bicycles. My bike
was stolen, so i borrowed my brother's (cheap) bike, which was stolen
as well. I keep my bike in the apartment now. A neighbor gave me an old
bike, but the pedal (with the bar and nut) kept falling off. After
losing the nut (it never would get tight), i was banging the arm on
with a hammer, which kept it going for a bit. This year however, when
it fell off again, i banged it on but realized i had neglected to put
the pedals at 180 degrees. Oops. I see no way of getting it off easily,
and (here's my excuse) i never liked the bike anyway. Old and creaky, i
wonder how much life it had left.
So, now, i am looking for a new bike. A few years ago a friend of mine
tried to convince me to build my own bike. I do enjoy building what i
enjoy using, such as my computer, but not such as a car which is only a
vehicle to get me places, not that i enjoying driving in itself. Being
cycling has some appeal to me, as more than just a healthy form of
travel, i've been toying with the idea of building my own bike.
At this point, i could definitely use some guidance, and so i am here,
asking for help.
I'll try to mention what i'd use it for.
I ride my bike the overwhelming majority of the time in town on paved
paths, sidewalks, and roads. My preference is (when i get into it) to
ride a few hours at a time, though in general i make frequent stops as
i meet other people. That is, i take a few hours, which is a mix of
both riding and socializing. I am looking to setup nighttime riding
with a friend, perhaps an hour or two in a shot, as we used to do years
ago.
I have some fear of ten speeds, most likely unfounded, that they are
not as safe as mountain bikes. But i am basing this on the thickness of
the wheels and not much else. At 5'4" i have found some bikes leaving
me without my feet on the ground. I am wondering what the optimal
height is. I am overweight, so bike seats can hurt. I weigh in at about
two-hundred pounds right now.
I don't care for the right way to ride if it makes it uncomfortable to
me. I don't need to be comfortable when riding, but i don't want to be
uncomfortable. I plan to keep good posture whilst riding though, but i
want to sit on the seat most of the time. Recumbant looks to different
to me from what is out there, so i would not (at this time) want one of
those.
As for willing to spend. I have no idea what the ranges should be, but
fromthe sticker prices i've seen, i'd gather that a "good" bike costs a
few hundred. I'd prefer to start off cheaper, and perhaps build up
should i get "into it". Like start off with a good frame, and other
components upgraded later. So, i'd be willing to spend a few hundred on
this project, but definitely not a thousand, at least not at first.
This all makes me wonder the value of home built. If prebuilt is more
bang for the buck, i'd probably just buy one of those. But, if they are
the same, or home-built is better, based on prices, i may want to build
my own.
