He's been in Santa Cruz CA for a bicycle ride in the redwoods... and
coincidentally for his daughter's graduation from UC Santa Cruz. We
enjoyed the cool sea breeze and barking sea lions along the cliffs.
    Good surfing too!

When in Santa Cruz, don't miss the Big Trees and Pacific RR and the giant
dipper. They both run on rails.

Seeing as the newsgroup seems to be dominated by the ever popular helmet
thread (3000 postings and rising) he's probably waiting for something a
bit more substantial to comment on.

Wow, you registered /Republican/?!? (That should get 'em to click the link
    🙂 )

Sorry to hear about your physical problems. I'm dealing with some nerve
issues myself, but mine apparently are strictly pain and not motor...so far,
at least. Good luck and perseverance!

Which begs the question: how many cyclists on these newsgroups are into
    surfing, too?
Here in the Northeast we can surf at least months a year.

Even though his journal says he has been in California the latest issue
of Velonews had a full page ad from Park Tools showing Captain Sheldon
Brown of the USAF who uses Park Tools to maintain his bicycle while in
    Iraq.

    (No, I'm not kidding).

    Hey Rick,

Are you asleep?!? UCSC has eight colleges. Jobst did not say which
    one she attended.

Rick: UC Santa Cruz has an east-coast-style system of colleges within the
college. Eight of them, in fact. Do I remember them all? Stevenson, Cowell,
Crown, Merill, Porter, College Eight... darn! Two more, what are they?

Anyway, that's why in my signature I mentioned not just UCSC, but also
    Stevenson College.

Little to do with bikes, but for your amusement: after several
months in Santa Cruz, I had noticed the rail tracks on Chestnut
Street, but never thought much about what ran on them.
(Maybe I thought they were disused trolley tracks, such as
existed where I grew up.) The Roaring Camp beach train
only runs regularly in summer. So one summer day I was
sitting on a friend's porch on this quiet residential street,
and this _train_, not a trolley, but a moderately large diesel
locomotive pulling a car packed with kids waving out
the windows and hollering, comes thundering down the
middle of the street and out of sight. I nearly fell off the
porch, and my friend kept talking as if nothing had
happened - since the train made two daily roundtrips in
summer, she was used to it.

  19. Sheldon, I'm sorry, but I have a problem with you.

You're going to try to tell me that a movie about a couple of guys
buttf**king is a "wonderful love story"? You're SCREWED UP, man!!

And what's the deal with your stupid beard? Don't you know that it
looks like absolute [censored]? If you wear a beard like that, you don't have
the common sense you were born with!

Sorry, pal, but you simply have no credibility with me. Your judgment
    is obviously rather seriously impaired.
