Whole Foods won't sell live lobsters

BY MARIA SHEAHAN and JOSH FINEMAN
    BLOOMBERG NEWS

"Whole Foods Market, the largest natural-foods grocery chain, will stop
selling live lobsters and soft-shell crabs as part of its policy of treating
    animals humanely.
Only frozen lobster products from suppliers that meet handling and
processing standards developed during a seven-month evaluation will make it
    into Whole Foods stores.

Lobsters and crabs "have some degree of awareness, feeling pain and having
the ability to learn," Whole Foods said in a statement.

Many lobsters spend several months in storage facilities before being
displayed in supermarket tanks, the company said.

One marine biologist disagrees with Whole Foods' assessment of lobsters.

"We don't believe they feel pain and there are a number of studies that back
this up," said Bob Bayer, professor and executive director at the Lobster
Institute at the University of Maine. "They really don't have a brain. These
are really not kind and gentle animals."

The institute receives donations from the lobster industry, Bayer said.

Whole Foods may resume selling live lobsters if it finds improvements in the
handling to ensure humane treatment, Margaret Wittenberg, vice president of
quality standards at Whole Foods, said in an interview.

"We don't sell live cattle and chickens in our stores," Wittenberg said.
"This is an issue about the live aspects of lobsters, the treatment and well
    being."

About 183 million pounds of lobsters are caught in the U.S. and Canada
annually, and 25% of them are sold live, Bayer said. Wild Oats Markets, the
No. 2 natural-foods grocer, has never sold live lobsters at its stores
because it considers the practice inhumane, spokeswoman Sonja Tuitele said.

CEO John Mackey opened the first Whole Foods store in Austin, Texas, in
    1980.

Mackey, 52, is a vegan who has said the company will be one of the first to
    adopt humane animal treatment standards."

That's their prerogative and it will probably sit well with a lot of
their customers. I'd rather shop at the Asian markets where fish and
shellfish and crustaceans are available live if you want them. I have
never bought dead, pre-cooked crabs or lobsters. Buying them live
gives me control over the cooking and, obviously, the freshest possible
result. I don't really care whether a lobster can feel pain or has any
sort of brain to process that information, but if other people do care,
that doesn't bother me either. -aem

Good for them. Lobsters and their relatives have largest nerve cells
of any other species - it's used as a model system for drugs which
affect the ion channels in nerve pathways. They certainly feel pain.
Plus, one last outlet for the fishermen raping the oceans for profit.
    Way to go, WF!

    Frozen lobsters are *foul*.

They *inflict* pain too...they are voracious predators in their natural
    habitats.

I say "just desserts" and all that...

What -- you think the fisherman should fish for free? You are simply
spewing more leftist eco - babble...
