Good for you. If I recall, the first day was somewhat easy - the 2nd day
sucked and the 3rd day REALLY sucked, but after that it wasn't totally
    awful.

Not totally awful. Great. Just what I was looking for. A not
    totally awful day.

Don't worry. It's all one day at a time, one hour at a time, 5 minutes
at a time. Eventually you think they smell horrid, and the idea of
kissing a smoker reminds you of kissing an ashtray after a keg party.

I won't even go into the health, smelly aspect etc. etc. of smoking - but
it's easier today to stop than it was, several years ago. And you may even
find after several months or a year or so, that your nose develops a much
better sense of smell............and cigarettes will really offend.

I've not found offense in them yet, but I do smell them on other
people quite distinctly as of this afternoon.

See? You're starting to find positive things already! Your sense of
    smell is improving.
Pretty soon, you'll notice that you're using smaller amounts of
seasoning, and things are tasting really good.

maxine, who quit dozens of times, and finally for good 10 years ago.

I think Mark Twain said it best:

"Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it a thousand times".

    ;-)

I do have friends that are using a lot less salt after quitting smoking,
and branching out in their tastes in food.

I know it sux right now and I'm sending you mental hugs, but it will
have it's compensations in the long run. Try to focus on that if you
    can. :-)

In the meantime, indulge in your favorite beer....... <lol>

Best of luck to both of you. I know it doesn't especially help

Back atcha, Jens, but I'll never catch up! I'm still on day three.

I know what you mean about time. I never noticed how much time there
was till Wednesday morning. Funny how smoking gives one the illusion
    of doing something.

I plan to spend hours cooking this evening. Perhaps all night.

Don't say "I quit smoking." The quitter attitude is not positive. Say "I
    gave them up."

As well, don't discuss your giving up smoking with your peers. Just let
it happen to you! Leave them out of it. They will not be supportive if
they smoke. Nor can you preach to them. Keep it to yourself. Trust me,
    it's so much easier.

My boss asked me one day at the elevator if I gave up smoking and I said
"Yes. Why'd you ask?" He said I couldn't smell the tar and nicotine.
This, after years in an environment of arsenic and napthalene.

My nervous system will pay for that later.

Really. I saw a list. Everything was on it, and I hated everything
    on the list. Everything.

Are you starting to breath better yet?
I had quit smoking for 17 years and thought that I could have the
occasional cigarette. Wrong. Six months later I was smoking a pack a day
again. That went on for 5 years. I was running low on cigarettes on Jan
1 and rather than go to the store I figure that was a good time to quit.
I haven't had one since, don't miss them, don't crave them.

OBFood: I sliced some radishes very thin and added about 1/4 their
volume of thinly sliced red onion. I then seasoned them with fresh
ground black pepper and kosher salt. Then I added some rice wine
vinegar and some good olive oil. It was a nice little salad with the
grilled steak. There were other things on the plate, but I hated
    them.

I figure it was costing me close to $50 per week for cigarettes, $200 per
month, so that is close to $1,000 since the beginning of the year. I
just bought myself a nice new propane grill with rotisserie. My trusty
old BBQ finally corroded right through at the front so m wife and I
decided that we should get a new BBQ as a mutual anniversary present. I
lucked out at the hardware store, found a nice one on sale. I asked the
clerk if they had any un the box and if the box would fit in the truck of
my Honda. The only one in stock was the one on display, all assembled and
ready to go. I asked how much for delivery and since it was only two
miles away delivery was free. They were loading up the truck to go my way
anyway so they loaded it up and delivered it 20 minutes later.

Dinner tonight..... grilled lamb chops and grilled asparagus, roasted red
pepper fresh baguette and a bottle or red wine.

That reminds me of a show I watched (yes, in the middle of the night) where
Justin Wilson (is that his name? the Louisiana guy) said that he loves doing
roux so much that he'll get up in the middle of the night and do a roux.
I could relate as it was late.

I've found that it strengthens my resolve to tell folks my smokin'
days is done. Think how foolish I'll look if (Heavens forbid) I
backslide and return to puffin' butts.* One can make use of the
