  1. It is apparent that the term has been much maligned in trade publications, and forums such as this
and others. But it is even more apparent that the term is here to stay, and that even IMBA has
embraced it. So for all those that think the term freeriding should be associated with riding off
trail, well let's just say you should find another term. Freeriding is an option that many here
take, and it is just that, an option. So shouldn't we find a better suited term?

I think the origins of mountain biking are steeped in freeriding, those that helped create the
activity just didn't have the foresight to call mountain biking what it is. FREERIDING. I don't
consider myself a mountainbiker as much as I do consider myseld a FREERIDER.

That's why "I" got back on a bike, to enjoy the "freedom" "riding" brings me, nothing more
    or less...

The self-described free riders I know don't think it's a problem to leave the trail. So in addition
to "free riders" (their term, not mine) I usually add "[censored]". Are you one, too?

You're an idiot. The origins of the sport are irrelevant. The currect facts on the ground are that
[censored] off-trail riders (who usually refer to themselves as "freeriders"😉 are doing their damndest
to get legal riding areas shut down. That's why they are [censored]. If you want to associate yourself

Hey, we all love to ride - that's why we're here. And many of us get a little testy about people who
through arrogance, selfishness, and stupidity put our access to good riding areas in jeopordy.

too bad there isn't a damn thing you can do about it then, huh? the term is here to stay, like it or
not (which you obviously don't), so you have two choices, stay mad, or get over it! But freeriding
does not mean riding off trail pal...Do a google search and see exactly how many negative hits are
    returned for the term "freeride"

I think it's idiots like yourself, and the boat boy that have attached the moniker to those you

There seems to be two interpretations of "freeriding". The first is the original definition, a
marketing term trademarked by Cannondale: hucking off of [censored] (typically big drops). They sold
outlandishly heavy, long-travel bikes specifically for that purpose. Since trails don't have those
kind of big-ass drops, it also meant riding off-trail. The second interpretation is 'just casually
riding around on trails'; this just seems to be a misinterpretation based on what the word seems
    like it "should" mean.

Very good, I like the second version, but I understand the first is what all the naysayers

It's a stupid term, just like "free skiing" - I figure anybody that wants to label themselves
    is a dork.

    -SkaredShtles-

  12. I would probably, if I had to label myself other than simply "mountain biker", call myself a freerider. I ride a small 4130 hardtail, with huge forks and tyres, that weighs more than most downhill race bikes, and pedals uphill worse...
I do ride up the hill as much as I shuttle, but thats mainly because thats how ya get to the top (and also because the road is sometimes closed to cars from snow or nobody will drive me..) !

I ride down fast, hit drops and launches, rail corners etc. (these things do exist on trails, its just many of these trails were thought to be probably horse-able and walk-able only before) However, I don't ride off the trail, and I'm courteous to other riders. I also help to maintain my local trails Conversely, I seem to find pleny of semi slick (lack of) tread marks going around trail obstacles, around deadfall and puddles, cutting difficult corners on single track etc.. strange that... And I bet a lot of other people would say the same thing. Its just that because of a moron fringe that is visible, freeriding is treated by puritans as being some kind of anti-mtb movement.

Well, I do ride off trail sometimes, like the skate park, abandoned quarry, BMX track, municipal structures... but not in the bush. Though, I have been known to build trails, but these have always been done with the surrounding environment in mind, and not in ecologically sensitive areas. Trails had to get there somehow though!

I would say the majority of "freeriders" aren't like the 13 year old kids you see at NSMB's forums....When you start painting everyone with the same brush you run into problems, like I unfortunately did in another thread......

    cheers,

thatwas pretty much my point. Although I don't believe people label themselves. It's those fools
that like to hang derogatory handles on things they do not understand, that have "hijacked" the term
freerider that was first coined by Cannondale (thanks for the refresher BB), and applied it to those
idiots that like to ride off trail.

There ya' go. That sums it up for you pretty well, and me too for that matter. There are those on
here that are WAY TOO HUNG UP on labels They are the ones that perpetuate all the negative
connotaitions associated with the term. I doubt the credibility of a few, as it seems they NEVER
ride, but rather are stuck in some lighthouse somewhere...trying to be a beacon to those that know
    the way....

VERY good question! I personally think it is AND it isn't.
    it is an oxymoron because:
-It is held in a marked off area
    -it is competition
-it is held on a (loosely delinieated, but delineated nonetheless) "course" with certain terrain/man made features which riders are obligated to do in order to score.
-I always thought freeriding was just more technical, downhill oriented trail riding, with some big drops and gaps thrown in for good measure.

    It isn't an oxymoron because:
-It tests the skills of riders that would have been garnered in real world freeride/trail riding, albeit in a controlled environment.
-There are marked courses, but unlike (most) downhill there are numerous differing courses to choose, so the illusion of "free" riding is there.

Really, iti s a silly concept. But, it does provide some outlet for the money being pumped in.....
It is not an argument against freeriding in general, either, because it really doesn't represent what freeriding is about, rather just the skills involved (with the exception, of course, of the skill of riding a big floppy , heavy bike up a hill) . Sure it appears that they are "off piste" and ragging up the terrain, but they were granted specific access to the land, and my sources tell me that it was rehabilitated post competition (thats utah, Red Bull Ride in Jindabyne I don't know about).
I think this new form of competiton should be labelled something more like "extreme trail riding" or something, rather than freeride.

    cheers,
    floody

  18. floody said:

How can it be "trail riding" when the riding doesn't take place on trails?

Part of the problem with "freeriding," as defined by the MTB media, not withstanding the wishy-washy
pap that the stoner from Georgia is trying to pass off as "free riding," is that it shows riders
riding off-trail, in very sensitive areas( albeit with permission from the land managers) and many
wannabe "free ride" grommets who can't pedal uphill to save their lives, let alone pedal uphill on a
heavy suqisher, see these images (moving or still) and try to emulate/recreate them in their local
areas and create HUGE problems for MTB access. [pretty awesome run on sentence, eh?]
