But I haven't read ANY mountain bike related magazines (or bicycling magazines for that matter) in
at least a year or so..I was commenting on what I've read here. I don't visit but a few web based
sites (Ridemonkey, MTBR, Gearhead.) And only one Usenet group out of the thousands, that being AM-B.

Funnily enough, I'm never heard of 'freeriding' mean 'riding off trail' before this thread. I've
always associated 'freeriding' with hucking off great big drops and the like.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) I frequently ride off-trail because
there are damn few trails in my part of the woods. I've heard one person describe the riding here to
be like California in 1915 (don't ask me how they know what the riding in 1915 was like).

However, when and where I find a real bike trail I will stay on it.

That's the original definition. It just so happens that very few trails have "great big drops", for
safety reasons as well as usefulness to the general hiking/riding users. So with the exception of a
few rare cases, freeriding means riding where it is illegal.

Freeride parks are popping up all over the place down here in the south. I know of a few in North
Carolina, and at least one in South Carolina. Although I haven't riden any of them.

If its a trail, yes. I've seen some areas where there are giant built-up humps of dirt that people
are allowed to jump on, but that's not exactly a trail. But that would be getting into semantics,
and we don't want that, right? :-)

As long as its legal, that's all that matters.
