  1. So i live in southeast texas and i'm really new at the running thing.
Its starting to get very hot and humid down here (as it always does
this time of year) and ive started noticing a DIFFERENT level of
discomfort while running. this has really only started in the last 3
days since i've been back from my trip to DC. Usually i can run 3
miles and yes i'm usually exhausted (i know i'm pushing too far but
thats for another topic) but i havent felt this feeling before.
lately, after the second mile i start getting this feeling just under
my rib cage right in the center of my stomach.. actually it sorta feels
between the belly button and just below the rib cage. its not painful
really. but its sorta this out of breath, warm, indigestion sorta
feeling. i always stop running when i feel this and walk laps and then
i'll run a half lap etc etc. I'm assuming that its just too hot and
this is a mild form of heat exhaustion. i'm probably not describing it
well and i'm sure that the solution is simple.. stop running so hard in
the heat.. but does this sound at all like anythign anyone else has
    experienced?

If you're really new to running, you basically shouldn't be running
"hard" at all, heat or not. Otherwise you risk injury - depending on,
of course, how hard, how often, how long, what kind of shape you're in,
    et cetera ad nauseum.

*Especially* in southeast Texas summer heat, I think you'll be best
served by running very slowly - about as close to effortless as you
can, certainly at "conversational pace" - until you more fully
acclimate first to heat and then to running.

A few general principles for new runners: run slowly. If you could run
significantly faster, choose to run longer instead - although here too,
you must be careful about how rapidly you increase the length of
individual runs and weekly totals. If you're eager to run more and/or
faster, educate yourself about how best to increase your distance
and/or speed - it's really fraught with more peril than some people
imagine, and it's a shame when someone gets discouraged by injury and
quits. rec.running is one good source, and don't ignore the
    rec.running FAQ.

What you have could simply be a side stitch, which is a common
affliction w/new runners. If that's what it is, you needn't worry about
it. It'll go away. More generally, running in a hot, humid climate
requires that you slow down. A lot. I live in the Wash DC area, which
has one of the hottest, most humid summer climates anywhere. After
mid-June, I have to slow way down from my spring-fall-winter pace. You
also need to hydrate heavily before you run (so your urine is clear,
colorless) and dress lightly, no cotton.

  4. You know, when I lived in Houston, I found 11 PM to be a really good
time to run! Of course, I was a student then.

  5. The only way to remedy these chest/abdoninal pains is to jog through
    them.

    Sincerely, G. Reaper

  6. that sounds like a potential death sentence to me.. but whatever.

M.A.T. is a troll with a particularly sardonic sense of humor. He/she
is also very active in rec.sport.golf and offers a lot of similarly
    helpful advice there.

  8. I happen to really like running on the beach in Sunny florida. Even
    during the day during
the summer. Most of my beach running is early in the morning,
    especially if I'm
going to cover distance, but for a short 3 mile or so run in the mid
    day sun, the sweat
drips and cleans your pores. It feels wonderful to me.

I would not do three miles day one. And I would wear a hat and/or skin
    protection.
Especially the pointy bald spot on top of my head.
