Ian Wood became Mackay's youngest mayor at 30, serving for three terms
and eventually becoming a long-serving Liberal Senator -- one of the
youngest in Australia in the 1930s.

A confirmed bachelor and an acknowledged eccentric who amassed a small
fortune through his tourism business, Wood refused to own a car and
would pedal everywhere on his bicycle. He was often described as "a
    narrow-minded man of broad vision".

    And a bit more:
"Ian Wood's service on the Mackay City Council comprised a total of
thirteen years as an Alderman and fifteen years as Mayor. At times his
ideas were ahead of his time and controversial but nobody ever seriously
questioned his honesty or integrity. He was known Nationally as the
    Cycling Mayor.

Ian never owned a car and would often he seen riding his bike around the
city. He enjoyed the exercise and used to say it was a good way of
having a look at the condition of the streets!

"You could say I'm futuristic. In my aggregate of fifteen years as Mayor
of Mackay I was able to introduce a number of innovative and progressive
changes. To me the most important move was in opening the Mackay Region
to the Tourist Industry. I firmly believed that, if you couldn't do
something of a progressive character, you shouldn't be in the job!""

"confirmed bachelor" - does that mean what I think it does? Not that there's anything wrong with that . . .

*laughs* Exactly - don't want to offend anyone!!

A bit like saying someone is a "colourful business identity" (ie.
gangster), or they are "helping police with their enquiries" (ie.
    guilty).

Strangely enough, the proportion of adults who cycle increases with the
distance from the centre of the city, at least in Brisvegas. And the
proportion in some regional areas is more than four times the rate of
inner city. Now I understand why all the government money is being
poured into bicycle facilities in the inner burbs. It would be sensible
to spend it elsewhere and we can't have that, can we?
