  1. I was reading in the Michael Barry book about his team using tension
socks (compression socks, I think) while travelling. Does anyone have
    experience with this?

    Yes

I've been meaning to read his book - do you recommend?
Anyway, I suspect they wear compression socks to reduce the risk of DVT
(blood clots). Of course - its they didn't dope their hematocrits wouldn't
be so high and it wouldn't be an issue (joke!). Anytime you fly you are at
risk for DVT's. Not sure why else.

Yeah, it's good. Nothing spectucular, but a nice set of anecdotes and
    stories.

  5. Hiya!
The way I'd heard it, deep vein thrombosis can happen during air
travel due to the combination of dehydration (happens in the not-quite
sea level pressurization of air cabins) and lack of motion in the legs.
I think someone has called it "Economy Class Syndrome." I have read
press accounts but not medical journal articles about people who've
apparently died on the plane or just off the plane.

I seem to recall a mid-80's Bicycling article about wearing compresson
hose while riding. I think John Howard was advocting them and Grewal
even did some experimenting as well.

Just the other day I was just telling my nephew about John Howard's
wearing support hose. He'd tell it that he'd walk into the store and
ask for some support hose, the clerk would ask what size and he'd say,
"Mine." Pretty much ended conversation. 🙂

Yes. I have persistent problems with deep vein thrombosis and, after I
broke my back last year in a cycling accident[1], I had to wear them for
the three months I was relatively sedentary. they aren't desperately
uncomfortable or anything, but frankly aren't much tighter than the sort
of lycra tights you might use for time trialling in cool weather.

I have a case of rather severe varicose veins in my left leg. A long
day at the office or similar long-ish sedentary periods leave my left
lower leg quite swelled, and very uncomfortable. On long drives or
plane rides, it would be almost unbearable without a compression sock.
My right leg has no problems. Based on my observations of my right and
left legs, I can see no reason whatsoever that someone without a
specific medical condition would ever use compression socks.

MY boss exted snan airplane from Switzerland years ago and have clot from
ankle to knee. He has no risk factors to deveolp DVT other than sitting for
8 hours immobile on a plane...

While the august and learned spokesman of RBT certainly shows evidence of
tension, and has provoked many people to want to put a boot in him, I
doubt one could accurately describe him as a sock.
