  1. After an unbelievable awful day at the office, beer was needed. As I
left the pub and unfolded the Brompton, a couple stopped to watch the
bicycle reveal itself from the tangle of metal.

    They were awestruck!

You three should watch me reassemble my dahon with the improved
handlebar arrangement. An elevation of mood is guaranteed.Still,
    practice makes perfect.

Tangle of metal? How much had you drunk? A Brompton is really a kind
    of breathalyzer, I suppose.

<snigger> Yeah, when they find you the next morning, sobbing in the
gutter, wearing a Brompton around your neck, it's the old "Had a few too
    many last night did we?".

Didn't drink that much - still got the Brompton together in about 15
    seconds.

Unlike the night the tourer attacked me...

Yes, I know. Unsafe, probably illegal, definitely bad for my (physical)
    health.

Never had that. There was the night when the tree attacked me and I
spent a week in hospital debating the titanium/bone interface and
    whether it needed copper slip.

I'm sure I want a Brompton, I just cant think what for...

Buy me a beer next time you're over and I'll let you ride mine round
    Gunwharf.

Then you'll know why you want one.

Looks like something an architect has designed. An architect that
    doesn't cycle.

I have one of these and it is a brilliant design. Quite literally it
folds in less than 5 secs. Further you push it along rather than
lopsidedly lugging a suitcase of metal like other folders.

Effectively you have a very short wheel base as you are sitting atop the
triangle so it feels (and looks a little) odd at first but once you have
ridden it for ten mins it is extremely manoeuvrable even at less than
    walking speed.

No oil and no corrosive parts. Frame is guaranteed for life. 10Kg.
Cruises on the flat around 10-12mph. With pedals and handlebars folded it
will go in the overhead storage on a train although i usually just put it
    next to my seat.

It has its limitations of course. No gears and you can't stand up and
mash the pedals which a more solid Brompton might accept. But for the
type of bike-train-bike commuting I do it is excellent. The longest I do
on it is ~5 miles from Clapham Junction to Hammersmith along the
    Thames.

My biggest complaint it people continually asking where I got it, how much
etc. I wrote to Strida and suggested they do as Tilly Hats do and give
owners a small book of contact details you can give out to people who stop
    and ask you about it.

The prices have gone up since the London bombings but i think you can
still get a basic model for about £200 which is much less than a
Brompton. If you don't like it after 60 days they take it back no
questions asked and give you a refund which is pretty fair.

    Cheers
    Noel

There is a lot more to it than whether they have copied a beer taste, which
    reports suggest they haven't.
Other brews are being discontinued, customer choice is being reduced,
advertising is misleading, prices will rise and lots of jobs have been lost.

A major part of Hampshire's heritage has been destroyed and the heart ripped
out of a Hampshire village :-(

It's also a crying shame that Cheriton brewery has closed - that was a great
place to cycle out to and camp in the back field at the Flowerpots.

At least there are some other fine brews in the County to search out by bike
    - such as Oakleaf and Triple fff.
