  1. Hello,

In 1992 I bought Shimano clipless cycling shoes for my racing road bike
and I am now getting circulation problems to my toes.

Do you think they are just worn out or could there be other issues.

What are you recommending for shoe replacements these days..ie: who has
    the best price-quality point ?

    Thanks

    Dear None,

Assuming that you were full-grown in 1992 and are still wearing the
    same socks . . .

Shoes tend to loosen with age, not tighten.

Circulation does not usually improve with the passage of 14 years.

It's easy to confuse circulation and nerve problems.

    Good luck,

    Carl Fogel

  3. Keep the shoes and lose the toes -- new shoes will cost you something
and you can hack off your toes with some implement you already own.
Good luck -- likely the end of any plans for the ballet.
    Best,
    Bill Black

Shimano shoes certainly used to be made on a very narrow last. But it's
perfectly normal for your feet to swell on long rides, so that if you do
your shoes up comfortably tight at the beginning of the ride they're
uncomfortably too tight - to the point of circulation problems - later
in the ride. This effect is more pronounced in warm weather, and is why
most shoes these days have fastenings you can adjust while riding.

So the answer may be that there's nothing wrong with your shoes, but that
you need to loosen them a bit after riding for a couple of hours.

Having said that if you've had your shoes for fourteen years they don't
owe you anything, and you might think about getting new ones. My own
preference is for SIDI, which are very expensive but also extremely
nice. However, do not buy shoes mail order - try them on before you buy
and don't buy ones which aren't comfortable. If they aren't comfortable
in the shop they aren't going to be comfortable after 100 miles.

Many people see changes in foot size as they age. Feet usually don't
get smaller but they sometimes get bigger - apparently something to do
with gravity and the passage of years, and they effectively flatten out
a little. Doesn't happen to everyone, though.

Also, although shoes do tend to stretch and not shrink, they don't wear
completely evenly, and that could explain your symptoms as well - some
padding somewhere is thinner than it was, so there is more pressure
    somewhere else, etc.

There is no substitute for going to your LBS when it comes to this one.
Many things I'd buy mail-order but my first new pair of cycling shoes in
over a decade would not be one of them - spend the money, get a decent
    shoe that fits.

All just my opinion and conjecture, worth exactly what you paid for it.
If you're smart, you'll visit a doctor and your local bike shop - the
    order is up to you.

it can't be the shoes. Must be the toes.

  7. Try Sidi Mega shoes: they have a wider toe box, and provide more room for toes
on wider feet. My feet are D, hardly the EE I've seen claimed for these shoes,
yet they work much better for my feet than other non-custom shoes I've tried,
considering arch support in addition to toe room andother fit
issues (Carnac, Shimano, Rocket 7, a few others).

    Thanks for that little tidbit.

I believe they STILL ARE on the too narrow side at the toes, especially
when you get into larger sizes.

I used to ride with Adidas indoor soccer shoes and toeclips, and then went
to Shimano STD and shoes. When I get the Shimanos tight enough not to
shift at the heel, there are certainly circulation problems at the toe,
which never happened in the other shoes. When you lineup and compare the
two shoes there's also an very noticeable difference in cut past the ball
of the foot, even though they match at the ball.

Sounds like time for a better fitting shoe.
