They want you to dig you old bikes out of your shed and convert them to cash
Good news- They'll sell your bike on Ebay for you.
Bad news - They keep 30% of the proceeds if you want cash. They charge an up front £20 for a presale service. They charge a further £50 to send you a box for your bike and collect it for you but only charge the purchaser £25 p/p.

So it is said.
And still they are the largest seller of tandems in the UK, one of the busiest online cycle shops, and (most importantly) they have not gone bust like so many other bike shops.
As a former High Sheriff of Surrey memorably put it:
And wistfully remember in the happy days of yore the irionmonger would keep a box of oddments in his store through nuts and rivets screws and bolts he'd rummage cheerfully then find the thing you wanted and say no, no charge, it's free
The poor old bloke alas went broke in nineteen sixty three...

A pal of mine who's spent the last nine months touring in South America, North Africa, Spain and Southern France has had nothing but good to say about the standards of support, service and quality of goods (Thorn Raven) from SJS. Yes, some items appear to be expensive but the do offer the esotheric as well as the hard to find stuff. There doesn't appear to be that much disatisfaction registered on their Ebay feedback.

That's just about all they're good for now, sadly. (Wasn't always the case).

On eBay they are alright: resonable/good prices, reasonable postage charge. Different from the website prices & postage. Mr Thorn's response to the numerous complaints about the £5 postage charge on sub £50 orders was to change the policy and charge £5 postage for *all* orders.
I think it is fair to pay extra for esotheric and hard to find stuff, but they're not exactly encouraging me to buy anything else from them. I get the impression that most of their customers are so wealthy that they (the customers) don't care about the prices at all, just as long as the service is good. Who else would buy a chainring at £46.99 that they could easily get elsewhere for £30.99?

I suppose my views are tempered by the fact that I only go to SJS looking for exotica on their website or to their Ebay shop for bargains and never fail to have my needs met by them. They have never been in the frame (sic) for a bike - none of their models appeal to me. For day to day stuff I use my LBS Woodrups which, thankfully, is going from strength to strength and is expanding into adjacent premises. There must be a burgeoning trade in cycles and cycling goods in Leeds as the Edinburgh Co-op are opening a branch here.

You don't go to Harrod's Foodhalls for everyday grocery shopping unless you want custom built packets of museli.
SJS has a place, but if I want to buy a light set I'll go to Wiggle. For carbon bling, SJS is my vice - for some reason I find it sexy to have my Air Zound bottle in a Thorn SuperSlick Carbon bottle cage at £19.99 + £10.00 for next day delivery.

And they say teachers aren't paid enough! ;-)

I feel well justified in spending that which I save on private motor vehicle transport costs or public transport each week on useless carbon bling. I now think of my bike as something of a carbon sink.

As noted above, its more likely that you'll be paying £46.99 for a chainring that you *can't* get elsewhere for £30.99. But you are missing the point: is anyone holding a gnu to your head and forcing you to go there?

Carbon sink? Is that in the same line as the carbon bogseat? ;-)

I've got to second that opinion - especially on the Thorn Raven, which has been a brilliant and reliable commuter for the last two years. Also, I've been able to get fixed-wheel parts from them that I couldn't get anywhere else, including a superb wheel build and good service. Too pricey? There's always Halfords...

Oh thank heavens! I thought it was just me who doesn't find any SJSC steeds appealling. Have to say I've never ridden one, but every one I've ever seen... I can't put my finger on it... except I find them to be, well, bland, boring or ugly is the nearest terms I can use to how I feel about them from a visual POV. I know people who've got a Thorn stted. I've seen many a Thorn steed up close, but no... they do nothing for me at all. So much so I have no inclination to even try one out. But the world would be a less interesting place if we were all alike :-)
