The Giro visits Passo Lanciano:
This is a new destination for the Giro, the
race has not been here before.
May 14th in the Giro:
Binda. Again. 1928 in Forli.
In 1938 a man who became much more famous as
a manufacturer than as a rider took a stage.
Cino Cinelli won the sprint in Rome in the
second part of a double stage.
In 1978 Saronni won the stage to Benevento.
The next stage to fall on this date was in
1981 and Guido Bontempi got it.
Saronni got it again on this date in 1982.
Followed by Bontempi again in 1983.
May 14th got the next couple of Giros off
until a TTT in 1986 when the Del Tongo team
of, yep, Saronni won the day. The Giro did
not appear on that date again until 1995,
by which time both Saronni and Bontempi
had retired.
We began with Binda in 1928. We'll end with
the man who surpassed him in stage wins.
Cipollini won in 2002 at Esch-sur-Alzette,
one of the 42 total he would take.
And we will end also with the man who may
someday surpass them both. Alessandro
Petacchi has a total of 19 wins so far and
two of them happened on this date, 2003 in
Catania and 2004 in Valmontone.
