I found broad beam lamps less than useful for road cycling. And I have ditched the rechargeables
altogether now for a dynamo set, where the battery never runs flat. SON et lumiére!

FWIW I went with 1 12W spot. If you read the thread there's a whole lot of good info in it.

so depressing to hear the roller slowing down

If Guy hears his SON slowing down I think he'll be a bit unhappy :-)

With the emphasis on SON ;-) A little-known secret is that you ride faster with a dynamo, cos it's
so depressing to hear the roller slowing down - plus the panic of becoming invisible keeps you
stomping up those 1 in 7 hills!

What about the 20watt mid-beam thing I read about on the Lumicycle website, it sounded like a
good idea. A kind of cross between a flood and a spot !

Morrisons are doing spare 20W MR11 bulbs for £1.99 for two, though the beam is a bit rediculously
wide at 30 degrees. So cheap I picked a pack up to wire up to my lab power supply some time and look
at the beam pattern. I don't yet own a lumicycle light set, but was looking at getting the 12W spot
and a spare 5W spot to slot in for longer night rides.

I've a similar commute (15 miles with 4 miles unlit) and have just got some lumicycles with a 12W
spot for the unlit sections and a 5W spot for the lit sections. I've not tested them in proper
darkness yet on the road but tried them in my back garden and I can confirm the 12W spot is
indeed very bright and probably sufficient for the unlit roads. I got the 5W in order to save the
battery on roads with street lights, however this is still quite bright to look at from a being
seen point of view.

Thanks for that, I am swithering over 20 or 12 watt. 12 seems plenty according to most people
on the ng, but 20 watt is very tempting. I'll let everyone know what I decide, thanks for all
the input.

I made myself a pair of homebrew lumicycle type lights - unfortuneatle I don't need them muh now,
living in a city, but they're great fun. They run of a 5.5Ah battery, and consist of 2 10w halogens
- I can also use 20w bulbs, but why bother ....? I get a run time of 2hours plus, which is ok for
most journeys. I've put some photos online at:
