Anyone used one of these?
www.viciouspower.com
Got any pics of it in action? It would be good to see what it is like.
Thx

lol, at those prices?
I could lash up a dozen sla + halogen at that price.

And either not be able to carry them or not have the same light output.
There's a big difference between competitive speeds offroad and see & be
seen onroad. The Vicious stuff is expensive, but it's a premium product. I
can buy 20 Bunnings cheap [censored] drills for the cost of a Hilti, yet for
those who use drills for trade, the Hilti is the better buy.

Sid is only a 12W, I have 20 or 50Watt which leaves those for dead. The
output is better, but I'm only carrying one at a time. Mine was built
for on and off road.

Really? not that I buy any [censored] power tools.
For that sort of prices, I'd want machined Aluminium, not just plastic
crunchies. I don't see plastic as premium.

For an even cheaper & lighter option.. I use a 12V/20W halogen 10deg
spot with an old laptop battery pack.
'Dead' laptop batteries are great sources of NiMH cells, since its
usually just one or two cells that's dead. Pull 'em apart and you can
chuck out the dead ones and replace as required.

10/13W HID (3W for ballast, the 10W is the lamp) are roughly equivalent to
35W halogen. That draw means you can run it off a reasonably light
battery for 3-4 hours, while even a 35W halogen needs 3Ah/hr, which means
big batteries. Add in derating for current and you'd need a 6kg battery
pack to do what an HID does with 600g.
You don't need that kind of light, but it makes it a lot easier to ride
off road at night. Same as you can ride a full rigid singlespeed off road,
but 27 gears and good suspension make it quicker and easier.

$400 ish for a power drill is the bottom of the trade market. Plastic is
better than aluminium in a lot of cases, since it's reasonably strong,
light, and most important, an insulator.

Suggest you have a look at the table at

couple of Light & Motion HID lamps as 55 and 50. A 10% overvolted MR16 12v

There's nothing there to show how they were measured, but I'd suggest a
20% overvolted 20W halogen is around the same as a 10W HID, based on
observation. The 20% overvolt will give around 30W output. I've done back
to back comparisons, and I can cast a shadow with a 50W halogen, get
minimal difference with a 35W lamp, and cast a shadow with the HID when
compared to 20W lamp. I don't have a light meter, but that's a reasonable
indicator.
Note that this was with the Trailtech HID, but they all use Welch Allyn
lamps, so the figures should be comparable.
If you're in Sydney you're welcome to see the demo yourself, assuming I
haven't killed the 35W lamp.

I'm sure you could, but that's not the point. You could buy 50 huffys for the price of a dura ace road bike, but so what?
The Vicous Arc HID is a very good product, designed for off road racing and used by some of the best guys in Australia (just check out the list of races that have been won by a vicious powered rider on their page).
I personally use an overvolted 20W halogen globe, which is about as bright as the HIDs I've seen. But my complete system with 2.5-3 hour battery life weighs ~550 grams. Compare that to 400 grams for the complete vicious system. In case you are wondering, your sla and halogen plan would weigh a hefty 2kg.

Now that's patently not true. Reassembling a broken bike with a blunt axe
is trickier, though a bit of lateral thinking can solve it: Oy, you! Fix
my bike or I'll thump you with this axe!

blunt or sharp, just use the back of the head - simple.
Hammer 50 nails into a Huffy, now that's an idea.
Waste of nails though.
I own a vicious power HID. I can ride off road at nearly full daylght
speed.

The vicious power lamp module is aluminium and carbon fibre. I suppose
the epoxy is a type of plastic....

Can you provide some of the pros and cons as you see them?
Any chance of some pics of the light in action?

be best to photo it beside a 'control' light for comaprison, wouldnt it?
not that i have had much experience of off-road night riding, mind you...

unless you count the footpath and steps to a police station 😉
Control light sounds like an excellent idea - something like a 6v 10watt
which is something most people here can probably relate to.

I have on old 6V 15 watt Vistalite. I overdrive it a bit but it should
be a reasonable comparison. Although the Vista light is quite a bit
narrower.

I set up a flickr account and here is the link.

The photos have info, except that the photos were taken at about 8
metres. Ass you can see the HID has alot more spread. I used to ride
with the 15 watt vista on the bars and a 10 watt vista on my helmet, now
I just ride with the Vicious HID on my helmet. Hope this helps.

I use a Cateye StadiumIII that I bought on ebay. If you have a look on the Welch Allyn site they show that the 10w HID puts out 500 lumens whereas the 21w has an output of 1850 lumens.
The 35w halogen does have a higher output when over voltaged by 20% but it is then drawing 43.4 watts and the battery wont last very long.
Cheers
