If in a hard water area, rinse really well with deionised water. That
should get the detergent off the plastic better than using normal tap
water.

Agreed - the stuff for sterilising home-brew kit works well on water
bottles. Use sparingly and rinse well with cold water afterwards,
though. If you don't have a home-brew shop nearby but live near a
decent-sized branch of Morrisons, they also sell it (don't think any
other big supermarket chains sell home-brew stuff, and Boots have also
stopped stocking it), as do many Wilkinson stores.

Funny - my experience is the exact opposite, hot water gets detergent off
much better than cold. Also, hard is better than soft. I am mostly
thinking of soap here, but that's pretty similar chemically to washing-up
liquid.

Soft water will feel more soapy for a given amount of soap. Likewise
hot vs cold. It is all to do with the critical micelle concentration
for the detergent at that particular ionic strength and temperature.

On the subject of Wilkinson's and water bottles, they have 750ml silver
coloured "Isostar" Roto bottles @ £1.00.

How much does half a tab of Milton's (or whatever) cost?

Presumably from The Milton's Head pub in Chalfont St Giles, just down
the road from Milton's Indian restaurant (oh and Milton's Cottage
