No, I think it's a reasonable request. After all, can you really believe
what the people selling advertising column inches in magazines tell you
about their readership and the £££ that come following an advert, and could
you resist the opportunity to find out what other people think about them?
So fair do's, I think. For the OP, one way of assessing the relative merit
of promotion through Trail rather than elsewhere might be to contact someone
that has advertised there - choose someone who really isn't a competitor,
obviously - and give them a ring for a chat. For my part, when such adverts
make an impression it's usually through repeated exposure to seeing them
around, the consequence of which is to make me think when next I'm in the
market for a similar product, what about...? But even then I'll go and do
some looking around of my own rather than just dig out the advert and
buy/book that. But in this, as in so much else, I'm not sure just how
typical my behaviour might be. If it is though, it suggests that a series
of adverts brings better results than a one-off.
Where I have found myself paying specific attention - and this comes from
buying other consumer durables rather than holidays - is when the Sunday
newspaper I take runs a feature on Things (could be almost anything) and I
think, ahah, I need to get one of those Things and my quality of life will
improve immeasureably and no mistake, you mark my words, and there's an
advert besides the feature. I will then use this particular Thing-seller's
web page as a starting point whilst I try to persuade my wallet that these
Things are Good Things. Which suggests that if you think Trail is the right
vehicle to reach your target audience, that advertising next to feature on
walking in Austria would be better than advertising in the back of the
magazine along with everyone else.
Hope this helps.

And yes, some of the Things I've purchased through being persuaded in this
fashion have really been jolly good. Exhibit A, a hard drive DVD recorder
which really does change the way you watch TV. What a sensible wallet to
have been persuaded to open and pay for that!
