Depends how much your habits require pockets... I quite like pockets,
but it's hardly the End Of The World if you just leave a toolbag on top
of the stuff in the main compartment.

In practice I think you'll find a bar bag is a much more convenient
place to keep snacks, tools etc. as you can get at them without getting
off the bike.

Now, now Pinky, if people actually read past threads perhaps we wouldn't get as many h****t threads? :-) At least this question is about cycling, and technically isn't the same as the older pannier thread, as the OP is asking whether side pockets on panniers are useful.

IME if you've got a bar bag then poockets are not necessay, as all th stuff you want quick access to is in there.

Nice idea, but I find the thought of punching holes in my expensive
waterproof panniers more than a little disturbing.
