Now I am really jealous. New Zealand is one of those places I would love
to live, but the seasons are backward. Do they sing "I'm dreaming of a
hot Christmas"?
I've got to go and ride there sometime.

Not in northeastern Illinois.
Not only do we have winds strong enough to push cars off the road, but also
tornado watchs and warnings.--

it.

BillI've just done a 1300km tour in Sth. Island of N.Z. It was great, and
suprising how many overseas visitors had come here especially to cycle the
West Coast region of the S.Island. So you're welcome too Bill. There's room
for one more - and you can sing anything you like! -

Yeah, that works.
Every time I try to ride and get about a mile from home the drizzle
starts turning into real rain so I come home and park the bike. Then
after I get in the rain stops. The weather is taunting me!

I don't have a geo map up, but isn't NZ one long island with a mountain
range for the backbone? It really does sound like cycle heaven for a
mountain nut like me. Are there any places where you can ride high
enough in the middle to see the ocean on both sides, east and west? That
would be the greatest.

BillHere's a link to a New Zealand map.
http://www.backpack-newzealand.com/mapofnewzealand.html
You will see two main islands plus a 3rd smaller island (Stewart Island)
Sth. Island is most popular biking destination. Can't think of anywhere
where water views are present on both sides from a height. We have the
Pacific ocean to the east and the Tasman sea to the west and they meet at
the tip of the Nth Island. There's plenty of amazing scenery everywhere with
glaciers, lakes, rivers and sounds in the Sth Island, and volcanic/thermal
areas in the Nth Island. And yes - mountain ranges in both islands, plenty
of skiing in the south, so if you're a mountain nut you'd better come and
have a look at the place. Riding not possible on Stewart island as it has
just 16km of road, but very popular for tramping. (Posssibly hiking in your
neck of the woods)
If you're serious there's a great little inexpensive book - 'Pedlars
paradise' which you'll find online. There is a North and a South island
edition and thy show the various routes and also a profile to give you an
idea of the hills to pedal over!Best of luck.

FredIt really looks inviting to ride the big islands, but Stewart looks a
bit close to Antarctica and probably pretty cold. Anyway, tramping, as
you say, also suits me, since there is a place here where I can walk
about 15 miles up and see the Pacific from the top here in California.
Of course it is then 15 miles back to my car but a very well spent day.
It just happens to be a no bike zone due to the amount of foot traffic
and the cliffs that an overly enthusiastic cyclist could go over. I have
a few years left before I can effectively 'retire' with enough money,
but New Zealand is now definitely on my list.
Thanks much,

I was born in Illinois and saw a mini tornado disassemble our school
playground while the rest of the class hid under their desks (1950's
safety rules for atom bombs and tornadoes. I also remember riding to
lake Michigan and some horrendous winds. When I moved back in 1993 a
storm did take some shingles off my house and that was only an average
storm. Still, I wish I hadn't moved back to California.

BillI usu. get one day each spring when i get to ride with a 10 degree list,
blown from shoulder to shoulder, but mostly alternating 6 mph hammering with
4 mph grinding straight into those Illinois headwinds for 6 hours on my road
bike, just for the experience of riding home at 30 mph solo. It's a lot of fun and one gets the pleasure of nasally, orally and ocularly
ingesting the freshly plowed fertile illinois prairie soils, which improves
the rider's serum carb and eloctrolyte levels, allowing one to dispense with
gatorade and powerglop. The angular momentum in my wheels on the 30 mph return leg make the bike
seem like it's welded to the road, and wind becomes silent and still.
Suddenly, instead of hearing the roar of wind one hears the birds, the
bike, and the occasional tractor, and last fall's corn husks float
alongside like seagulls. My Wind Ride is one of the best rides of the
year...max

something around 25 with almost no effort. Short but sweet. Now rain is
forecast for the rest of the week. Ride while you can.Quoted message said:

cattle barns, stink plus, and I do remember cornfields where I could
stop and steal, er borrow, an ear or two in the summer. I still had to
drink but there were real lakes to drink from and/or dip in.Quoted message said:

Schaumburg? I'm sorry. Been there, didn't do that.
BTW, anything near Chicago that used to be a corn field is now a condo
field. Metra rail has spread Chicago like a people plague. You have to
be at least 50 miles away to find corn these days. I grew up there in
the 50's and corn was everywhere, but not now.Ain't progress wonderful?

a great day out there RIDE!This morning was rather nice out. I had the morning off to watch the
youngest while my SO was off doing necessary things. I put her in the
trailer and we took a jaunt down to Chinatown. We walked about, stopped
in the bookstore and read some children's books, picked up some BBQ pork
and roast duck. Later we picked up some from pastry from my favorite
Chinese bakery and picked up some soup noodle and congee for lunch. The ride to work was nice also, if a touch windy. Nothing like last
week though, I'm hoping that stays the same.--
