Seen MartinM's letter? (other thread) I wonder if the MPs are
circulating among themselves a standard response to the CTC's standard
letter...

Still, it is reassuring when they take the trouble to reply - democracy
in action, and all that.

Haven't even written to my MP yet - I would prefer to draft my own
letter rather than use the CTC one cos there are a couple of lines in
the CTC letter I'm not keen to put my name to.

Nothing to stop you editing what you send at the CTC's autowhinge
system. I certainly didn't send it "as is".

am certainly a strong supporter of cycling and believe the Highway Code
is an important resource for road users.
I recognise the concerns you raise about the wording of the new Code. It
is my understanding, however, that the new Code does not say cyclists
'should' use cycle facilities rather that they should
do so 'where practicable'. It is, however, important that the legal
consequences of the wording particularly on the use of cycle helmets -
are fully considered. As such, I will happily write to the Minister of
State for Transport, Dr Stephen Ladyman MP, making him aware of your
concerns.
May I suggest that you also participate in the consultation on the new
Code? To view the revised Code and comment on the changes visit:

He's wrong. It's cycle routes that should be used where practicable, as
at present. The new rule 58 adds "and cycle facilities such as ...
where they are provided". That is a clear instruction to use the
facilities. Note that the wording does not exclude cycle lanes from the
instruction although they are not named specifically in the new rule
58.

Perhaps lazy MPs copy the complaints to more diligent MPs, using a
false name, then copy the reply they get to the original complainant.
