  1. what kind of times do you have to have for any event (100 breast, 200 breast, 100 free, 200 free,
any other times you know) in yards to get recruted by a college. if you arnt recruted, can you still
swim for them (intercollegeiate, not intermural)

    thanks,

    matt

Don't know about the times that would trigger recruitment, but don't wait around for that. Decide
which schools you are interested in and contact the coach at each one. Ask about the program and
tell about your times. You don't have to be recruited to be on the team. Most swimmers are not
    recruited.

    Matt,

Well, it depends. What school are you thinking of swimming for? Remember, there are Div. I, Div. II,
Div. III and NAIA schools all over the country. If you're looking to swim at the Div. I level,
you've got to be pretty darn fast, but the other three have a pretty wide distribution of speed.

I would visit the web sites of the schools you're interested in and look at the results of their
meets. If your times are pretty close to theirs, I would call the coach and ask to meet him. Don't
wait for the school to call you. If your favorite college is out of your league or is way too slow,
    look elsewhere.

    HTH, HAND.

    thanks,

    matt

This information is probably a bit old, but it's my experience. I finished high school with mediocre
times, but figured with only one year of real competition, I was looking pretty good.

Trouble is, I wanted to go to Kenyon College, which was then and still is, the top of Division III.
Well, I sent my times in anyway, and was told in no uncertain terms that there wasn't going to be a
real spot on the team for me. They did hold out the olive branch that I should come see the coach
when I got to school and we'd discuss the option of getting on a workout squad.

I wound up not doing the workout squad thing either (as I realized just how far I'd have to go to
even get CLOSE to making the intercollegiate team), but they did offer me the option.

So you might not be fast enough to make the team of your dreams right out of the box, but at least
at some schools you can weasel into the workouts, even if you can't go to meets or officially be on
the team right away. If you do well on the workout squad, you can move up.

  5. thanks all.. any more adivse is still welcome. so even if my times were not up to par during my last
years in HS (im not there yet), i could still swim intercollgegate at a decent school?

    thanks again

Yes, depending on what you mean by "decent." If you mean big state-funded university with a large
athletic budget, probably not. I swam at a small NAIA school (with a very good academic reputation)
    which is now going Div.
III. I even got a partial scholarship. There are many more doors open to you than you know; you
just have to do the research and a little legwork.
