This information is probably a bit old, but it's my experience. I finished high school with mediocre
times, but figured with only one year of real competition, I was looking pretty good.
Trouble is, I wanted to go to Kenyon College, which was then and still is, the top of Division III.
Well, I sent my times in anyway, and was told in no uncertain terms that there wasn't going to be a
real spot on the team for me. They did hold out the olive branch that I should come see the coach
when I got to school and we'd discuss the option of getting on a workout squad.
I wound up not doing the workout squad thing either (as I realized just how far I'd have to go to
even get CLOSE to making the intercollegiate team), but they did offer me the option.
So you might not be fast enough to make the team of your dreams right out of the box, but at least
at some schools you can weasel into the workouts, even if you can't go to meets or officially be on
the team right away. If you do well on the workout squad, you can move up.
