  1. I have read some articles benefiting the use of fist gloves, and i thought: "Why not just close your
hands in a fist and swim like that?".

I would like to know your opinion on this subject, For me the fist gloves "praise" seems a little
like a comercial campaing. I am not doubting about the benifits of swimming with a closed hand, but
just the necessity of buying fist gloves, After all i think i am still able to control my hands
    muscles... 8=)

When I tried without the fistgloves, I found that I'd be distracted by other stroke issues and that
    my hands would open up.

    You could. No problem.

Lemley developed them for training age group teams, many of whom would cheat (conciously or
otherwise) by opening their fists. I suspect most of his customers are age group coaches.

  4. Try swimming with tennis balls or racquetballs. Works great.

When swimming without fist gloves you have to conscienly hold your hand shut. A) this causes you to
sometimes clench your fist which causes tenseness in your arm which is bad. and B) you can sometimes
forget and let your hands open. Particularly during the most important time where you should have
your hand closed. I.E. when compensating for picking your head by stroking down and pushing your
head up to breath. If you try to breath and your position is incorrect and you are under water,
natural reaction is to push down and raise your head. With fist gloves no can do. With closed fist
you just open them up for a fraction of a sec that you may not even notice.

Another interesting effect of the fist gloves is the total loss of sensation from the water. When
you take them off your hands feel HUGE. I've heard them called swimming with dinner plates. I'm not
sure if this is a good thing or not but it sure is cool.

I didn't know they could swim.

I never could get the damn things on my hands anyway.

A little water and hair conditioner works wonders.

In Japan we do "goo, choki, paa" drills, meaning rock, scissors, paper, as in the Japanese way to
select a person a la eenie, meenie, minie, moe. In a goo-choki-paa drill we swim one or more laps
with fists, one or more with two fingers extended, and then one or more with regular hands. Some
coaches take it further and build up one finger at a time. When I'm swimming with only one or two
fingers I make sure I'm aware of my surroundings to avoid breaking a finger! Swimming with fists
does really make you conscious of the role of your forearm.

Which pretty much nails the advantages I would (never having used them) presume. An argument for
fists may include the flexibilty to try something like a 400 alternating fists/open hand every 25 or
the chance to try a little 'fist work' in a meet warmup.
