I browsed the book a bit. There was a reference to ham sandwiches
(served on the split yeast rolls) with a "gussied up" mustard (recipe
for mustard also included).

Not at all. "Long pig" is fairly well-known, after all, and as Heinlein
says, most meat taboos are directed at filling the freezer with local
wildlife, rather than local ... well, locals 🙂
