  1. A local hardware/department store in my town is selling two types of
one-speed chains: a regular model for 29 kronor and a special rust
resistant model for 129 kronor. (Neither is a bad price.)

Now, I'm not too sure if the word they used implied stainless steel
(that'd be a bad idea, right?) or that it has been chromed. Seeing as
how nobody here knows what that product actually is until it would
arrive from the main warehouse, I come to you. Have you seen something
similar? Is it a waste of money or merely a functional extravagance?

I'll bet it is a nickel-plated KMC 410 chain. Clas Ohlsen?

  3. Biltema, actually. I couldn't find any fancy chains at Clas Ohlson.

So gentlemen: Is the chain of my dreams nickel-plated, chromed, or
    stainless?

Years ago, the nickel-plated Sedisport chains seemed to resist rust
    well. Maybe this is similar.

IMHO, a waste of money. If you keep your chain lubed and actually ride the
    bike, it should not rust.

Could it be the RustBuster from KMC chains?

  7. That kind of cavalier attitude won't help me any in a land where summer
lasts 11 hours and 36 minutes and slush falls from the sky already
    saturated with rock salt.

Dunno. But I saw a nickle-plated KMC at CO a couple weeks ago. Haven't
check out the bike stuff at Biltema. Any good stuff?

I always heart that rust resistant chains are not that strong as they
    supposed to be.

Neither will nickel plating, for that matter. If the vendor doesn't
know enough about the item, I'd try to find a different vendor. Of
course, that may be futile advice in some locales.

Yes, the bicycle section of their cataloge is really comprehensive:
Most everything is there. Also, after stocking so much Americanized
[censored], they've started to sell some decent city bikes. One even has a
half-assed, but more than adequate, chain case. 2500:- for a sturdy
rack, 7-speed Nexus, and a dynamo hub sounds like a good deal to me.
However, they still don't any dreigang parts.

  12. BTW, I'm the thread poster.

  13. 129 Kronor is about 12-15 dollars.

I'd get a nickel plated one, I've done plenty of slushy riding, and
    they indeed will rust less.

They look cooler as well, :P

I like the cheap KMC nickel chains just fine.

If they are plated, strength may be OK. If they are stainless steel
("rostfrei" or "inoxydable" are two designations sometimes used) then
they may not be strong enough, depending on the alloy employed.

Hay, Hay, Hay, comeonnow! God knows I'm not a flag waving zealot, but
most "Made In the USA" bike stuff is pretty good quality. To me "[censored]"
refers to Sh!tty quality. If that's what you mean, then I really can't
agree w/ you. If you are referring to our tendency for designing &
outfitting bikes for good weather, leisure use, then I can understand
where you are coming from. Although, I try to never ride in the rain
(such as today). Living in Sunny Calli :? I don't have to. Also, my
nose runs miserably below 60F. John

there are different types of "rust resistant". some are stainless, some
are plated. stainless is better if weather conditions are as you say.
you need to identify the chain to know for sure which is which.

Stainless steel bicycle drive train chains? First I heard
    of them. Where?

Having been to Biltema (without looking at the bike stuff too closely)
I think it is fair to say there is no "made in the USA" stuff there. I
think the OP meant products that are suited to the American market, and
not suited to the local market. I'm sure 99% of the stuff at Biltema is
made in China, and the other 1% is made in Taiwan.

Rain is pleasant! And places that don't get rain, don't get snow! You
SoCal guys are missing out on some big fun! Yesterday I went for a road
ride (a bit cold), then in th evening I drove 15 minutes and went
XC-skiing for 2 hours. Today I am going speed skating. Variety is the
spice of life 🙂 On the bike ride I saw some guys kiting and
    wind-surfing!
