Yes we are. Compare hands and feet, which come from the same basic
mould but are very, very different in there ability to sustainably
take weight after a /lot/ of evolution.

Bowing allows for a bit of shock absorption which a straight arm
doesn't. It allows muscles to take weights rather than joints,
which isn't so sustainable over a long day but /is/ more
comfortable while the muscles can stand it. Think of the way bent
legs take shocks better while straight legs take weight better. If
hunting around drops is looking for a comfort point then it makes
sense that locking or unlocking elbows is another aspect of moving
for comfort. I certainly vary my elbow lock in a crouch on longer
rides, and I'll sometimes ride arms locked and sometimes with arms
bent on drops.

is not of itself a compelling bit of reasoning, nor is it in any
way showing that drop bars are necessarily a bad thing. Drop bars
/may/ be used by a lot of cyclists because many of them find they
work well.
You articulate your problems as being with shape, but that is just
ignoring the far more basic problem that you've got weight where
your body hasn't evolved to take weight. It's simple to come up
with a good hand shape using clay, so make some clay grips for
yourself and see if you can hold a pushup position significantly
longer than just resting on the floor. Then decide if your
forelimbs are still all about carrying weight and it's just shape
of the interface that's the problem (of course, an assumption of a
flat bit of ground for holding weight up is a fairly good average,
yet feet aren't flat, rather they are adaptive, very much like hands).
