Does anyone know if there's an adapter of sorts that can move the front derailleur away from the frame more?
I have a hacked commuter and the BB is very long because of extreemly wide rear stays. Because of this I haven't been able to find a front derailleur that can move the chain over enough to engage the outer ring.
Short of welding things together, does anyone know of a fix? I've been running it without one for a while and the chain line stinks, so the chain jumps and drops a lot. Given this problem, running without one isn't really something I want to do.
Never seen such a thing. Try finding an old SunTour triple/mtb front der. like XC or MounTech. If I remember, those had a very large swing to them, and just may go out far enough. Good luck. Jim

Front derailers are pretty cheap. Perhaps you can buy one that's made for bigger tubing and shim it on one side only to make it offset. I've used small sections of PVC tube to make clamp shims.

That's an idea that's crossed my mind. Might end up doing something like that in the end.
It's too bad, considering that I have a large pile of parts (saved from the garbage) that I've saved from the garbage, yet I'm stumped on this one.

I know that Santana, who uses 160mm rear spacing on their tandems and thus puts long BB spindles to keep a decent chainline, had some kind of kludge to put the front derailleur further out so it would shift ok, but I never really knew what they did to achieve this. I think going with another derailleur and the shim is probably the best way to go.

No I do not. But some changers, especially less expensive models, have more 'throw'. Might be interesting to try a couple ( no cable needed, just bolt in place with outer limit screw slacked and shift out with fingers) at your LBS. Start in the under-$20 bin.
If that doesn't do it, a front changer braze mount could be easily brazed with a spacer (steel scrap) between itself and the seat tube. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971
