Well, as ever it depends.
For regular commuting you can't beat dynamo powered lights. They are always there and they just
work, you don't have to remember to charge the batteries to take things on and off the bike etc.
Best of all is a hub dynamo, but a modern sidewall driven one is fine. Thought hey make a bit of
noise, they don't really slow you down very much, if at all I use AXA HR ones they have been good
and reliable. If you run a battery LED rear light then you can put a 3W bulb in the front. (I have a
battery LED on my utility bike where I use it a lot, on my tourer, where the light's don't get used
so much I have an AXA rear LED light that is run by the dynamo but also has a battery system to act
a stand light)
I use a second rear LED as an extra lamp and as a backup. I use the good old 5 LED Vistalite. It's
pretty cheap and pretty bright
The Cateye AU100 is a good BS compliant rear light.
I'm probably going to invest in a front LED as a backup light for the front. The Cateye Opticube
ones look good from what I've seen.
I did build up a home-brew rechargeable system, it did give me useful extra light at a time when I
was travelling on an unlit path, but I can't say I ever saw any benefit on the road in terms of the
way drivers behaved.
