January 11, 2006 - 12:50PM
Former Olympic cycling champion Kathy Watt will ride at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games after winning the Australian time trial championship.
The Barcelona Olympics road race gold medallist and four-time Commonwealth champion from Melbourne powered over a tough 27km course at Mt Torrens, near Adelaide, to post the fastest time of 40 minutes and 23 seconds.
Watt, 41, easily beat Athens Olympic champion Sara Carrigan by 24 seconds.
Natalie Bates was another nine seconds back in third.
The women's time trial opened this week's national road championships and is also the only event at the titles where the winner gains an automatic Games berth.
Watt won the road race at her first Commonwealth Games at Auckland in 1990 and also competed at the 1994 and '98 Games.
