  1. From The Age website:

Cyclist Watt wins Melbourne Games spot
    January 11, 2006 - 12:50PM

Former Olympic cycling champion Kathy Watt will ride at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games after winning the Australian time trial championship.

The Barcelona Olympics road race gold medallist and four-time Commonwealth champion from Melbourne powered over a tough 27km course at Mt Torrens, near Adelaide, to post the fastest time of 40 minutes and 23 seconds.

Watt, 41, easily beat Athens Olympic champion Sara Carrigan by 24 seconds.

Natalie Bates was another nine seconds back in third.

The women's time trial opened this week's national road championships and is also the only event at the titles where the winner gains an automatic Games berth.

Watt won the road race at her first Commonwealth Games at Auckland in 1990 and also competed at the 1994 and '98 Games.

probably moves afoot as we speak by powers that be to retrospectively change the rules so that only people under 41 can make the team...

Under 41 and whose initials aren't KW.

I reckon she is doing a power for women's cycling (as are all those out there doing it) but more importantly, doing a power for sticking it to ageism and ideals of what people can and can't do at certain ages, and what women can and can't do (& should and shouldn't do). Kathy Watt, Lori Meunzer, Jeannie Longo-C, Alison Sydor amongst others are proving you don't get slower & weaker as you get older.

There were a few comments floating around about "she has been concentrating on winning this event" etc... ie. She'll never get selected unless an automatic selection...

I wonder whether anyone measured her bike yet....

  5. She's awesome on a bike ... at 41! ...

Good on her. I hope she doesnt pick any silly fights this time around.

Of course. Once you're at a certain vintage and beyond what is considered a "normal" age for an athlete, then you have to get yourself the key to the door, rather than be a part of the general raffle that occurs.

Rumuor has it that Charlie Walsh isn't very flexible, and neither's
    Kathy.

    Charlie's gone now ...

Scientific studies (ref: you google them yourself) showed people do get
slower and weaker. Apparently, you also get tougher and more determined,
    and out-peak yourself.

Yes, but the effects are mitigated by continuing training rather than
retiring and watching on TV. Keep googling 🙂

The effects are not entirely nullified, unfortunately.

Yeah after I wrote I thought of adding something about that. And
Charlie really hated Kathy. Above and beyond. A cynic might even say
Charle hated most people with talent. 🙂

But Kathy has managed to pick her fair share of fights even without
Charlie around. When I spoke to her a couple of years ago I thought how
much she had mellowed.. but last year she got her [censored] kicked over a
    stupid scrutineering row.

One hopes. I do wish her well, She is a couragous rider. And from
Warrigal which is a good thing. She just needs to choose her fights
    more carefully.

Jeannie is a real legend. And rumor has it has some of Kathys warm
    outgoing personality

You get much much sneakier and more evil.

The last time we did paintball me and Jeff murdered all the kids who
were playing. And I do mean murdered
