A distinct and welcome change from the usual method of reporting.

Hopefully not "just" because it was a bus involved (you know, the
"public transport must be perfect at all times regardless of what's
happening in private transport" kind of thing).

You could well have a valid point there.

No waffly, no change at all, just an indication that your paranoia is

It is always reassuring when people don't have anything better to
put up as an argument than being rude.

Helen may have a different view to you. That does not mean she is
paranoid, only that she has a different view.

Actually Dave, the thread is continuing a discussion on Newspaper reporting
style run last week. I did some research in the EDP from where Waffly had
souced an article she objected to and (i would suggest) showed that there
was no anti cyslist bias in the form of words generally used viz "Injured
party the story is about was in a collision with a vehicle" The same form of
word being used whether the injured party be cyclist, pedestian or driver.
The constuction is neutral and avoids laying blame.

I was dissappointed at the time that Waffly did not contribute to the
discussion and thought that a further example of lack of ant bias would help
reinfocre the point. I happened to bump into the strory while checking
something about a football game on Monday.

    have a nice day.

So why couldn't you say that in the first place without jumping
straight in with a gratuitous insult ?

You didn't convince me or a number of other people that, "the

More to the point, if it was the drivers fault then neutral terms will
still be biased against the cyclist. Presumably journalists use neutral
terms because they are not sure of exactly what happened. Or they're lazy.

    I'll help:

Pete Biggs summarised quite well in response to:

    Quoted message said:

One does not read, "a car was in collision with a cycle. The
cyclist, Mrs/Mr X died was injured." At this stage it is not known
who is at fault, or if there is any fault, yet it is always written
where it is the cycle that is "in collision with" or sometimes,
"colliding with", suggesting the action of colliding is the action
is on the part of the cyclist.

"Collision with" doesn't suggest that to me. It is a neutral expression,
and it's neat to use it the way round the press do when the story is
focused on the cyclist. Any suggestion of action is the work of one's own
mind. On reading these sort of stories (without specifics), various
images flash up in my mind: including cyclist getting hit from behind, hit
from side, and cyclist going into side of vehicle. I might only think of
only one sort of action instead if I was preoccupied with the idea that
the press was out to [censored] off cyclists at every single opportunity. I'm
    not.
