In article said:So, as you might have garnered, I singlespeed quite a bit. I also have a tendency to ride
until I bonk.
I am thinking this is probably not good in the long run.
It won't hurt you. Bonking is from running out of glycogen, which is what your muiscles use
for energy.
Quoted message said:Kinda like the "World's Strongest Man" guys that seem to have problems with their heart exploding
and such due to too much anaerobic training.
Riiight. It's the roids, not "too much anaerobic training"
Quoted message said:Now granted, I'm a long way from that kind of intensity, but maybe I shouldn't be pushing so hard
on every ride.
Push as hard as you like. But eat!
I eat a good breakfast (usually non-sugared ceral and granola, fruit and yogurt), then ride. That's
enough for up to about two hours. Longer than that and I need to bring food. Powerbars, whole grain
fig bars, GU, whatever.
Quoted message said:I did some web research on the dangers of too much anaerobic exercise, but didn't come up
with much.
'cause there isn't any such danger. Other than croaking from heart problems. But if you have those
sorts of heart problems you're probably going to croak from them if you exercise or not.
Quoted message said:My doc just offered that I shouldn't be getting my heart rate up to 185-190 (the old 220 minus age
max rule) on the steep climbs, but I'd like a little more detailed info than that.
As you have guessed, your doctor doesn't know much about exercise. Few do.
If you vomit or see spots, slow down.
Quoted message said:Anyone have any good links?
Pretty much any book on cycling physiology.
_Serious Cycling_ by Ed Burke Long Distance Cycling or something like that by Fred Matheny (can't
find it at the moment)
Eric
(before someone points it out, yes I know Ed croaked recently.)
