I have an older steel frame (Gios Super Record) that has a problem with the handlebars constantly coming loose in the Cinelli R/1 quill stem. This stem has always had that problem and I need to finally do something about it. I have to decide between several solutions. I can install a new stem and bars or I can install a threadless quill adaptor and use one of the new type stems. The final solution could be to buy a new carbon fork and go threadless without the adaptor. The carbon fork solution would be the most expensive. Are the carbon forks worth the expense? I have never ridden a bike with a carbon fork. It looks like the weight savings is very small. I am very pleased with the way the bike rides now. If I go with the second option, do these quill adaptors really work?

The 1R stem is notorious for not gripping the bars tightly. Just get a 1A and you're set. Phil Brown
Quill adapters work fine, and the removeable faceplates on threadless stems are very convenient, particularly fitting Cinelli 26.4 bars. CF forks are considerably lighter than steel forks, sometimes half as much depending on the fork. Does all this mean you should get another fork or a quill adapter, probably not. If you do not need more rise (which would weigh in favor of a quill adapter and stem with rise), then I would just get a Cinelli 1A. I have four or five of them sitting around in my basement, in various sizes from 10 -12. Most are in pretty good shape and for sale cheap. -- Jay Beattie.

I would just replace the stem and bars. There are plenty of quill stems with faceplates if that's a feature you like. You have more options than when your bike was new - bars can be round or anatomic, stems may be level or rise above horizontal.
Changing forks and stem formats are another discussion entirely but to your immediate problem I'm surprised you've put up with a 1/R all this while. They can be frustrating. (and unsafe!)

I'm going to go with the just change the stem solution. I like the way the Gios fork looks and rides anyway. My handlebars are 25 years old and need changing so I will have to get new bars and a stem. I want to get away from the old Cinelli size of 26.4. Are the Modolo quill stems at Nashbar high quality or is there another brand I should be looking at? Are Ritchey bar a good choice?

Modolo, ITM, TTT all are good choices. Ritchey Hbars, great choice. We have TTT stems, NOS, 120mm as well as other lengths if Nashbar doesn't have the length. Just for info, I used Cinelli 64/42s for years and got a 26mm Cinelli ti stem, so changed the hbars to the one that felt most like the Cinellis, hey were Ritchey WCS 'classsic's..great bars. '

If you like the way the bike rides now, then go the cheapest route. Just get a new stem. A friend had a 1R on his bike, and he had the same problem you had. The solution was to get a new stem. A threadless/carbon fork set up would also work, but that would be the priciest solution. Unless you have a lightweight steel fork, most carbon forks will be about 1lb lighter. Going threadless will also give you a much larger selection of stems to choose from. Quill stem choices are getting smaller every year. --------------- Alex

I second the recommendation of the Ritchey, with one caveat. The Classic bars are just that - traditional round shape. Ritchey's ergo bars, however, are some of the more extreme on the market. Super comfy while riding in the drops, but the short flats combined with the extra long top (the curves from tops to the drops is very sharp) tend to lead to bruised forearms during sprints/pantani style climbs (in my dreams). Also, if you have small hands, reaching the brakes from the drops can be a little difficult, and prolonged braking can more easily induce hand cramps when compared with other bars.

1. there's not that much expense if you shop around. 2. it allows you to go threadless - a much better idea. 3. it improves the ride a little.
all in all, a carbon fork, if you get the right one [i had a lot of problems with chinese kestrels] is a good thing.

I was being flippant about 'picture day'.
I still don't understand why a professional riding 32 spoke wheels on a racing bicycle should be remarkable. Or 36 spoke wheels for Paris Roubaix. Or 28 spoke wheels on a hill climb or time trial. Pros realy do use wheels specific to the day's event. Is that remarkable?

You know how intent I am to look pro, so you can also guess how much I worry about what various racers are using these days. I just thought it interesting that determining the number of spokes might present a newsworthy item and added to it.
