It's a matter of preference, fit, and application. For me, the wider grip provides better handling, breathing and control. The sweep back is better for my hands and arms. The rise fits me and my bike.
Here's a report I posted after putting a riser bar on my geared bike 3 yrs ago:
My feelings exactly. I went to slightly shorter stem, and it decreased the sensitivity of the front wheel to a more comfortable level.
I don't see why you couldn't take the same two frames and outfit one with risers and one with flat and get the exact same position on both. It's just a combination of stem, rake, and handlebars. I think risers are in style and flat aren't.
You can only if you can find a flat bar with 3-5 degrees of sweep, like a titec Flattracker, and you don't mind having a 45 degree stem and always worrying about when it's going to break because it flexes so much.
You can get flat bars with up 5, 9, 11 or even 15 degree bend, in widths up to 660mm (26" for those of you who prefer that). So you really can replicate most riser bar positions with the right stem.
And I'm not sure why a stem with rise would flex any more than any other stem, or be more likely to break. In fact, I suspect the load may be distributed at the critical extension to clamp area better on a stem with lotsa rise...
That's a neat little creak amplifier they have there.
Not in the least - used the exact same one (but in silver) on a previous bike (needed to be much more upright - lower back issues) and it didn't cause or amplify any creaking, was rigid has a very rigid thing etc. Bottom line is, it does what it says it does and well.

Heavier wheel equals more traction. I felt as if I was hanging out over the front wheel a little too much. I went from a 130mm stem, to a 120mm. I added a 1.5 riser, a Race Face offset seatpost, and shifted my weight more towards the rear. It made all the difference, and loved it.
The bike was a 19.5 Voodoo. It was a little on the small size, but I did not want to go with the 21" frame. I was between sizes, and felt the smaller frame would be a better choice. I now second guess that decision to go with the smaller frame.

Is that what you meant when you wrote it "decreased the _sensitivity_ of the front wheel" (emphasis added)? I think that is what Bomba was questioning*, as a shorter stem makes steering quicker.

No, as it was the placement of my ass over the rear wheel more than anything. Change in the stem length just coincided with the rearward shift in the seating position. I have a tendancy to leave out some detail. I will try to do better in the future with this.

No, as it was the placement of my ass over the rear wheel more than anything. Change in the stem length just coincided with the rearward shift in the seating position.

So I bought a shorter stem and it facilitated the problem. Is this basically what you did?
So I guess if you get an offset seatpost which I never thought of, it along with stem length adds another variable in getting a preferred riding position when it comes to weight distribution and cockpit dimensions...
