Sheldon, what do you run thru your grinder to clean it? I have used the hot water tap but I'm sure there is more I can do. Thanks.

Stale bread, maybe?
I've used stale bread and it works okay. I still have a greasy residue.

I used to work in a grocery store and one of my jobs was to clean up after the owner had used his meat grinder, he insisted no soap be used on it (which i accept with cast iron) but i would cheat and use soap and extremely hot water when he was not around, several times he caught me and roundly berated me for it, but on those occasions when he was unaware of what i had done he praised my ability to clean his steel grinder.
IMO the grinders are not 'seasoned' the way an iron skillet is and dishwashing liquid is fine, i use soap on my food processor and my old hand cranked meat grinder to no ill effects.
Perhaps i am missing some other important aspect of this debate but as far as i can tell there should be no problem with cleaning a meat grinder with soap and hot water. Now my pepper grinder is another issue all together. It don't come apart and the one time i washed it, it took days to full dry and become useful again. But its an old wooden model and i really should up grade to a version that can be fully disassembled. --- JL

Might there be parts of the grinder that need to stay lubricated - where the soap would remove that lubrication?

What kind of a meat grinder are you talking about? The only two I'm familiar with are the attachment for the Kitchenaid mixer and the old fashioned hand cranked one that comes in various sizes. I put the parts for both in the dishwasher. Janet

Really hot soapy water.
Would it improve results to run ice cubes through first?

There aren't all that many parts to a meat grinder, regardless which. Naturally if it's electric you're not going to submerge the motor portion. The only parts to clean are the body, the auger, the plate, the blade, and the retaining nut (five parts). All should be washed by hand with hot sudsy water, rinse, and dry. The plate will normally be of hardened tool steel and should be lightly coated with cooking oil to prevent rust. These days most grinder employ a stainless steel blade, but if of tool steel then oil that prior to storage too. There's no rule that the grinder can't be cleaned in a dishwasher but I don't recommend placing carbon steel , aluminum, die cast, or tinned parts in the dishwasher. It shouldn't take more than three minutes to clean a grinder by hand, no one can be that lazy they need to use a dishwasher to clean five measly parts.

If the dishwasher is already half full, there's no reason not to put those 5 parts in there too.

Apparently you didn't get the rule book, Janet. <g>

Well yes, in an commercial grinder i imagine there are such parts but i would think no food would come into contact with a 'lubricated' portion of the machinery and i cant recall ever having to wash such a part as ball bearings or the like.
Nothing like that of course in my hand cranked table top grinder all its parts can be washed in soap and water. --- JL

Yes, really hot soapy water. Although I dry it thoroughly, I also put all the metal parts in a 200 degree oven for 15-20 minutes to insure that it's dry. My grinder is tinned cast iron and there are a few small areas that are not tinned. I don't want to risk rust. I also rub those surfaces with a bit of oil on paper towel.

I always clean mine by hand regardless of the state of the dishwasher 😉 I don't know why, I just do. It's like the big pots. I always hand wash them even if there is room for them in the dishwasher. I think it's because I get to use the [censored] factor afterwards 😉 I can [censored] about doing "the dishes" <G>
