  1. Last time we went shopping, we found a display of refrigerated tubes
of various herbs. I'm wondering if anyone has tried them. I would
love to have cilantro on hand for when I get a craving. There were a
half dozen other varieties, but this is the one that stuck in my mind.

    Anyone?

  2. I tried the cilantro a few months ago when the store was out of fresh
cilantro. It tasted like grass. It not only was awful, but awfully
expensive....$4/small tube. I have not tried the others. Maybe basil
and oregano fare better.....but I really doubt it.

    YMMV.

Thank you very much, Stuart. That's exactly what I needed to know. No
sense both of us wasting four bucks!

If it's anything like what they sell here: I bought a tub of parsley and
wound up tossing it. I'm frugal, but that stuff was awful. It did have
lots of additives (sugar, salt, vinegar and chemicals). I did read that
before I bought it, but stupidly thought it would still taste better
    than dried. Not so 🙁

Okay, that's two "No" votes on the tubed herbs. I'm so sorry that you
guys paid good money for [censored]. I hate that! Thanks for sharing your
    experience.

  6. I'll pipe in with a third no. I make a wonderful Basil sauce and fresh
basil is a must. I too, thought the Basil tube would be better than dried.
The additives really kill the freshness their trying to achieve. Dried
Basil is much better than this expensive tube of green gluck.

Remind me in the spring to send you some fresh. If you can figure a way to
freeze it, let me know. I don't much like the stuff but it is good in a
    lot of things I make.

I looked at the display in the produce section of the supermarket,
considered for a moment, read the ingredients and put the tube back
down. I'm not sure what I was looking for, but it seemed to me that
there was a lot of added stuff that didn't belong there-- things like
sugar and chemicals I'd never heard of. I almost wouldn't have minded
if they were filled with things I knew did a good job of preserving
flavor, but this didn't look like it.

Other people must have had the same thoughts I did because the very next
time I was in the store, the display was gone and hasn't been back
since. I think they realized that this was one product that wasn't selling.

I will say this: If they ever do invent a product that tastes like
fresh herbs in a tube and stays good after it the tube is opened,
there's a market for it. The idea is great for people who want small
amounts of fresh herb taste; they just need to perfect the idea.

A couple years ago a friend had so much basil she shared frequently. I
started freezing it. 2 TBS of chopped basil to each section of an ice cube
tray. Then I filled it the rest of the way with water. They popped out
beautifully. I had a gallon sized bag of basil ice cubes that lasted me
until spring. They were great! They didn't have enough water in them to
hurt a recipe, but just enough to keep the basil green and tasty.

    Michael

    I won't. No way, no how! :-P

Central Market carries a bunch of fresh herbs every year, all year, and
I'm now making good use of my greenhouses! We've had 2 hard freezes now
and I sill have 2 pots of live basil in Greenhouse #3. :-)

The rest of the "harder" herbs in the herb garden are ok, even with the
coating of ice they got the other night. Dittany, rosemary, sage, thyme
    and mexican oregano...

I've been getting HUGE bunches of fresh dill from the oriental market
for 99 cents per bunch, then drying that in the dehydrator and storing
it in glass. I pretty much use that mostly for fish and other seafood,
    and sometime steamed veggies.
