Just seen waterscape.com, which is British Waterways online resource for walkers, cyclists and boaters. Although you might think it's limited to navigable waterways and their immediate locality it actually includes a rather fast response scrolling and zoomable UK map down to 1:50K OS Landranger base, much quicker jumping about than multimap or streetmap (though without the same search facilities)

Very quick, and goes down to indivisual building detail (better than 1:50K), or at least it does by MiL who backs onto the K&A. (Spend christmas on a narrowboat, it was the guest accommodation at the end of the garden ;-))

Ah yes, just zoomed down to our house, though first time I went past Landranger it was pointed somewhere very remote where I lost detail so I had it filed under "pointless", which is not the universal case.

On the link I have here it's quite a bit quicker than Google Maps, and rather easier to get what I'm looking for. That might not be what /you're/ looking for, but I can't see that one is a slower version of the other.
