My mum decided to phone just as it started so I only caught a glimpse
out of the corner of my eye. Just wondering how many cameras they had
to use for that. My guess is that it was more of a set up than a real
race, given the almost ad-like footage.

There was certainly a sense of multi-takes especially with the bike leaping
over the car
but it made entertaining viewing all the same.

It is a magazine type show, ie lots of small bits with some specials,
and some regular items.

amongst the specials has been a series of 'races' between a bod in a
car and another form of transport.
The rules for this are quite simple. If it is Clarkson vs the other two
presenters, Clarkson wins, otherwise the presenter loses. So far they
have had:
Clarkson vs a marathon runner over the London Marathon course during
rush hour.
Clarkson vs two climbers up the verdon gorge.
May vs Atherton downhill in Lisbon.

The filming was very glossy with some obviously 'set up' bits in there.
The bike went a different route to the car, including down some very
long sets of steps, and over some jumps. If it was a straight race then
they must have had a significantly large number of cameramen, so I
suspect they re-shot several parts of it.

Among the regular items is their 'star in a reasonably priced car'
where they take a celebrity and see how fast they can do a lap of their
track (an old airfield). This week it was Ellen MacArthur who wiped the
floor with them all, getting a time very close to that of an F1 driver.
Apparently she learns very quickly ;-)

Clarkson, in an interview, has said that in these various races they do
the actual race first, gathering whatever in-vehicle footage they can,
then re-visit parts to get more footage. I suspect the jump over the
Clio was of the 'more footage' variety.

I've always fancied doing a training ride with her somewhere on the isle of
Wight - she has a Giant OCR - but I rather think she'd be too good for me!

across Europe. Of all of them he won only one AFAIK, the London to
Swiss ski resort public transport vs Ferrari but then he only won by a
few seconds.
