  1. Greetings all! My, I haven't been here in a while (it always makes me
    hungry!).

As usual, I will be hosting the Steelers game this week. One of my friends
just told me he's allergic to whey. This stuff is EVERYWHERE!! I'll have
to do a bit of research, but need to get something together for this
weekend. Pot Roast / Roasted Veggies should be safe. Snacks? Buffalo
    wings --

That takes care of this week.........does any one have ideas? I look
    forward to your input.........

Buffalo wings are a safe bet.

    Just avoid dairy.
It's harder to avoid corn than it is whey IMHO. ;-)

Make some baked home fries. Easy and always a bit hit!

Buy some yukon gold or red skinned spuds. Clean/scrub them off (do NOT
peel! This is an easy, low work recipe).

Slice them about 1/3" thick, then turn the slices on their sides and
slice again to make 1/3" square fry strips.

Toss in the oil of your choice (I prefer olive or grapeseed oil) in a
    large bowl.

Sprinkle liberally with your choice of seasonings (I prefer either lemon
pepper or a fajita mix). If you don't want to use a pre-mixed spice, try
salt, pepper, a bit of onion and garlic powder, and some dried celery
    leaf.

Place them on a cookie sheet and spread them out flat. This works better
if they are not touching each other.

Bake in the oven at 375 F. until they start to brown.

These were always a big hit when I made them for Dungeons and Dragon all
night games back in college. ;-) Cheap too!

    Cheers!

Yum!! Those sound fabulous. One of the things I've been noticing the whey
in is packaged stuff. I used to make pot roast with the McCormick's
seasoning bags - always delicious-- but they contain whey!

Whey *is* everywhere. It's a milk derivitative that appears in a lot of
processed foods. How about something unprocessed?

They do sound good. An alternative to consider: Cut potatoes in small
wedges, toss with olive oil, rosemary and garlic. Bake at 375°F until
done. Salt and pepper while still hot. -aem

Sorry! I typed 'garlic' when what I meant to say was 'olive oil,
rosemary and thyme.' Garlic is never far from going into almost
anything I cook, but in this case, no. -aem

    Food fillers... ;-P
    Gotta love 'em! (not)

I've not had to read a lot of labels lately as mine and my dad's diets
are pretty much all fresh/fresh frozen meats and veggies and some tinned
veggies, no additives. Just pure, plain food from scratch.

I use "Fiesta" brand seasonings and DO read the labels on any of the
mixes. So far, I've not seen whey solids on them. If you get just pure
spices and not the mixes, and make your OWN mixes, you can probably
    avoid that. :-)

Whey is actually very good for you if you are not allergic to it.
    I'm not.

It did, but I understand. ;-)

Let us know how it came out???

It's one of those "seat of your pants" type recipes with no exact
    measured stuff!

Wedges are good, they just don't go as far when you are feeding a small
    crowd...... ;-)

Microwave popcorn is another feed the masses type item, as is spagetti.

Well, stick with fresh (as opposed to preprocessed) meats and look at vegan recipes. They
    won't contain whey.

Does his allergy include other milk products? If so, substitute soy milk or rice milk for
    regular cows milk.

My son is a vegan and I've also discovered how pervasive whey is.

It pays to look at the different brands. Not all products contain whey, and we look for
the brands that don't have it. Even among the same product, taco spices, for example, one
brand contains whey, while another doesn't. It pays to look at all the brands.
