Don't like red or black - either of the others are OK.

It really depends on how you plan to have text and pictures on that
    backround.

I'm with Claire. So much depends on what everything else is going to look
like. But FWIW, to be the party pooper here, I dislike textured
    backgrounds.

Another 'aye' here for the above.

  10. The text under the banner on the sample pages is the color that I will
use. Partly for the "elegance" theme, mostly because it shows good
    against the darker background.

Black = 5 (two people liked burgundy also)
Burgundy = 5 (two people also liked black, 2 purple)

Purple = 4 (2 people also liked burgundy)

    Red = 1

Chris, don't take this the wrong way, but every one of those backgrounds
    is a visual atrocity.

There's rarely a good reason to move away from a simple background
colour like white, beige, or (if you must) black. There's a reason why
the pages most beloved of nerds and UI types don't have dark-coloured
    folded-cloth backgrounds on them.

    Think clean design:

    http://digg.com/

    http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/index

    http://www.disseminate.com/

    http://www.kanai.net/weblog/

    http://flickr.com/photos/rcousine

Note that I would specifically exclude my own blog (wiredcola.com) from
this list. While the basic design is more or less mainstream Blogger
stuff with some acceptable customizations, I have an atrocious graphic
at the top which is a deliberate visual joke, and a somewhat dated one
(the fact that the site is called "Wired Cola," the colours and
letterforms of the logo, and the slogan "the world's only Cybermorphic
weblog" should be good hints as to when this concept was created).

So what I'm saying is friends don't let friends do amateurish
    backgrounds.

    Advice worth its cost,

Not taken wrong. I did ask for input, and last time I checked,
consrtuctive critisism counts as such. So I took your suggestion to
heart and went to the page I had built so far.

First, I removed the image BG and replaced it with a few solid colors,
"testing the waters". But thay all looked flat somehow (sorry 'bout the
    pun).

So, I tried putting just the page heading in a table with the satin BG,
thinking it might add some of the lost "bling". Better, but the rest of
the page was stiil dull, and it made the hole thing worse Therefore, I
    came to a comprimise.

Most PC modems have the option of whether or not they display image
backgrounds. so, I put both solid bgcolor AND an image background
attributes in the body tag. Perfectly legal HTML protocol, and you have
a choice of how you want to view the pages.
