Dear All,
Do you know if it is possible to fit any sort of thumb shifter to a Nexus 8 speed hub?
I currently have a twist grip but don't like it.
I know there's a combined brake/rapidfire shifter available but I want a simple shifter if possible and to be able to choose my own brake lever.
Would it be possible to make a lever? I have access to machine shop facilities.
Am I right in assuming I'd need to figure out how much cable it requires per shift.
Not sure how I'd do that and the indexing might be tricky!!
Perhaps I could get hold of an 8 speed derailleur thumb shifter and somehow increase/decrese it's diameter to alter the cable pull?
Be simpler to make a "multiplier" - find ouit how much the shifter moves per click, how much the hub needs per click, and make a double-pulley (with some sort of frame-mounting and cable fixing arrangement) with a pulley ratio that make one fit the other.

Thanks for that, I think I understand what you're saying. Not sure I like the idea of a frame mounted pulley system though!
I will have a read up about pulley systems and have another think!
They're not common, but SA made for years a single-pulley for their shift cables. It was about an inch in diameter; what you would need would be about the same size, easily mounted on the down-tube in the bb area.

The S-A one just changed the direction of the unhoused cable , and was mounted at the seat cluster, the cable would (initially) follow the top tube from teh TT mounted quadrant shifter to the pulley and then down alon the seat stays, and later on it'd go in a bowden cable from bar-mounted trigger to the front of the top tube and transition to housingless there.
