  1. I am 50 yo and last year ran a 1/2 Marathon in 1:49. I notice the NYC
Marathon requires a qualifying time of about 1:36 for the 1/2. What is the
best way to improve my time?

Minimally, you can increase speed with the 1,1,1, rule. Run 1 mile once a
week (1 of your many training miles) 1 minute faster than your typical
    training pace. There are legions of specific training programs out there;
you can search on Daniels or Lydiard or Galloway (Gallowalker) for the 3:52
    marathoners out there.

A weekly tempo run is probably your best bet. Get a copy of Daniels'
Running Formula, by Jack Daniels, for a complete guide to run training.

Or, conveniently, 1:49 for a woman. So surgery's one logical route to
    your guaranteed NYCM entry.

go to 2-a-days & cherry pick the 1/2M course to qualify on as they're
not equal. many marathons like houston, miami, Chang-Arizona, have
flat fast Half Marathon races as the "undercard". Tucson in fact
boasts with pride that its 1/2M course is a fast downhill run certified
    by USATF.

  10. There are no time qualifying requirements for entry in the NYC
marathon. Are you refering to the guaranteed entry? If so do they still
    do that?

In any event to cut 13+ minutes off your half marathon time you need to
set a solid foundation and build up speed in your long runs and by
    doing speed workouts.

For a half marathon I typically did 3 or 4 15 mile runs before the
race. I'd start out at slower than my usual training pace by 10-15
seconds per mile. And increase my pace a bit with each additional long
run. Prior to that (I did say you need a solid foundation) I would do a
gradual increase of my long runs over the course of 4-6 months. I like
to plateau at a distance for a few weeks before increasing the distance
again. If you want to race a half marathon then you need the confidence
that when you get to 10 miles you aren't going to fade.

My old training schedule, when I used to do NYC, would be to run a half
marathon in the spring. Recover for a few weeks and use the endurance I
gained to spring board into getting ready for NYC.

The best way to get faster is to run with faster people. This is in
addition to speed work. Do a search of rec.running for speed work ideas
and select the ones you like best.

    Hope this helps,
    Andy

  11. Im 48 and looking to run 3:30marathon to Qualify for boston.
Build your base for 12 weeks
Do four to six weeks of speed
    taper for two weeks
    Then enjoy your success

Just ignore the trolls, or laugh at them.

but what theBill said reminded me of a quote I came across when I first
started running. I don't remember the author right now but it goes:
"The key to running faster is running faster."

In training, this mainly means running intervals. there are lots of
variations and hopefully some one chimes in on specific ones that are
best for you. But since you are planning a marathon, a longer set
likely applies. sets of 800meters or 400meters. maybe even occasional
    1600's

I'm nowhere near your speed, so i won't presume to give exact programs,
but that's the type of training I'd try.

enjoy the run and good luck!
    Ed
