  1. I was out and about with some friends on Sunday, then we went on to another friend's house. (They've
decided that cycling is brilliant, I evidently have a strong influence)

Basically, there's a big hill in a series of hills. I decided it would be a fun idea to speed up
as far as possible then shift down... it was working well, until a sidestreet appeared.
Ever-cautious, I stopped. I was in 3-7 on the steepest hill I knew, and I stopped. You can imagine
    what happened next....

Well, I pushed it up and I still beat one of my friends to the top :-) I learnt my lesson though!

Getting used to the new bike, it's very nice. Need to fiddle with the gears a bit now though but
that's what my free service is for in a few weeks! Took a little breaking in but now everything is
    adjusted to perfection, wahey! 🙂

Now I am cycling everywhere. It's great, and so much easier now. I get to the "hey I'm out of breath
phase" (for example on some stupid hill), it passes, and I feel like I can carry on forever, yay!

From the comment: " I decided it would be a fun idea to speed up as far as possible then
shift down" I'd guess it was the other way round. Largest chainring and smallest in the
    cassette, or 21st 🙂

free service ... would this be a h*lfords bike by any chance? ... get the service sooner than you
think you need (just in case your crank is coming loose ... i have experience if this!) and just
hope they know what they're doing! my gears have been worse since having their first free service

Just curious, why did you stop for a side street?

I wouldn't dream of it!!! No, this one came from a local shop - a branch of Walton Cycles 🙂 My
friend - an inexperienced cyclist - had a go on it and i heard him smashing through the gears, I
think it messed it up a little bit
    :\

Well, naughty naughty I was on the pavement. Because the hill was so damned steep I didn't want to
get stuck in the path of a car 🙂

Sorry to sound like a patronising [censored], I mean it in 2 wheeled solidarity, but please, please
please get Cyclecraft by John Franklin shorterlink.comshorterlink.com. For many reasons the pavement
is not the place to ride.

I know - and I wouldn't normally do it. If I were familiar with the aforementioned hill and used to
it, I would've been on the road. The way was clear and I wanted to get some experience in a safe
    place on it...
