in terms of EFAs, I've seen vegetarian friendly flax based supplements, and
standard cod liver oil tablets. I've also seen a capsule that offers omegas
3, 6 and 9, all from non-fish sources. I've done a lot of reading around,
but mostly in circles. Are there any major disadvantages, that you know of,
from using flax rather than fish, or vice-versa? Thanks.

Cod Liver Oil is a source of vitamin D and A. It's not as
popular as it used to be because to get enough vitamin D you get
too much vitamin A.You're not supposed to eat fish more than 2-3 times/week because
of mercury content. Flax Oil should be kept in a black jar in
the refrigerator. Flax seed should be ground fresh every time
you want to use it.Walnuts contain Omega 3s and are easier to eat. Probably the
best and easiest source (after fish) of Omega 3s is fish oil
capsules. I buy Carlson's Labs Norwegian Salmon Oil, 1000mg from
The Vitamin Shoppe. Most people get enough of omega 6 and 9; 3 is the one that's
low.locker

It's the EPA and DHA Omega 3 fatty acids that are the good stuff. Flax oil
has a relatively poor conversion rate IIRC, so purified fish oil concentrate
(high in EPA/DHA) is probably going to be the best. There's some evidence
that taking Vit E with FO could be a good idea too.Bob

Mmmmm. That will teach me to act in haste, and be so poorly educated with
regard to a topic. After thinking about it, and going round in some google
circles with my reading, I plumped for a capsule that is suitable for
veggies, based on flax and pumpkin seed oils, as well as some other things,
and has Omegas 3 - 6 - 9 in a 2 - 1 - 1 ratio. From what Locker and
yourself say, sounds like this was a wrong call, and I probably won't need
the Omega 6 and 9 at all anyway. To compound the error, the capsules were
on 3 for 2, so now I've got six weeks worth. -

Because I'm a wimp, I take it in capsule form.

population have trouble elongating these short chained FAs. There's
something fishy in those no fish oil, plant-only mixes. On that page he says that the mix contains "omega 3, 6 and 9 varieties
of ESSENTIAL fatty acid sources".But then just a bit below he says "omega 9 ... are NON-ESSENTIAL
because the body can produce them from sugars and starches".So which is it? A clear sign of EFA deficiency! It doesn't really seem
that "Udo has it all figured out". -

I went for these, which seem similar.

conversions to EPA/DHA. It is limited, especially to DHA. For example
see this - http://tinyurl.com/4cdrxBut I fully expect someone deficient in EFA to have attention span
short enough to start writing almost adjacent sentences that directly
contradict to each other. :-) -

Grapeseed provides antioxidant/phytonutrients, not an essential fatty acid.
Olive oil provides nothing essential that isn't better provided by fish,
flax, and a GLA source like borage.Quoted message said:

re: mercury content..
I've heard that some fish are less loaded with mercury than others..
is this a fallacy? My father-in-law was up here last week, and he's an avid freshwater
fisherman. He told me that mercury falls in rainwater, and would
therefore be present in all fish, where I've heard that it's a result
of chemical dumping.I love fish, and would eat it everyday if the rest of my family didn't
hate it. This is something very important to me..BLink

an Asian coast guard we once met. He seemed coconut-oil-diet kind of
slow, you know, that islander kind whose brain cells are filled up
with mead acid. Also bored with all the patrolling of our ship. So he
asked for food and cigarettes. We really took offence ("What, no
vodka?"😉 but gave him among other things a half liter bottle of
sunflower oil. He drank the whole bottle right there. I was
impressed. Our usual coastal acquaintances were expecting to be
greeted with vodka, even on fish factory islands like Shikotan
(http://artedi.fish.washington.edu/okhotskia/ikip/Results/dbmaps/map/southgrp.htm)
which are predominantly female - and we know that gentle flowers don't
like strong liquors. -
