: experience some major set backs. Shin Splints. I can't seem to get rid
: of them. I stopped running for two weeks. I have been supplimenting my
: running by using the elliptical machine, cycling, and yoga. However, I
: am still experiencing lots of pain. What can I do?

: I did buy new shoes about three weeks ago. I have the Asics
    : Gel-Kayano® XI.

: I'm very concerned that I have only to date run up to 12 miles and only
: have two months left to train.

: Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Two things:

First: Shin splints can often be connected with a tight achilles tendon.
In your yoga routine you should be sure to include alternate leg pulls,
which stretch the achilles tendon. Try to get to the point where you
can hold your toes with both hands and place you forehead on your leg
while your elbows are on the ground. That should stretch the achilles
    enough.

Second: If you are not able to resolve the problem by the middle of
November, stop, work on getting rid of the shin splints, then set a
new marathon date when the shin splints are gone.

  7. If you haven't made any significant changes in training/volume, it's
probably the shoes. Not what you wanted to hear, but shoes have a lot to do
    with shin splints.

The Kayano XI is a good sturdy shoe, but if it's significantly different in
motion control than your previous pair, can still cause problems. Once you
find a brand/construction/model that works, stick with it.

  13. Hey Larry -

Are there any additional exercises I can do to help heal the shin
splints? What do you think of my choice of shoes? Is there somewhere
you know of that I can go to obtain this information.

    Thanks

  19. Hey David

I went from a Nike to Asics, but I already had the shin splints just
before I bought the new shoes. I was hoping the switch would help???
