  1. I'm a 48 y/o male. My weight has ballooned to the highest it's ever been.
I did weight watchers in the eighties and then discovered Atkins in the 90s.
Have done it a few times but always slid back, gaining more weight each
time. I think my problem has always been that I get bored with LCing and
eventually begin to crave cookies. First it's just one, then two won't hurt
and before you know it, half the box is gone. then some fruit to wash it
    down.

Last year I read The South Beach book and came to the conclusion that it's
similar to Atkins - although healthier - low fat, etc. The first 2 weeks fo
SB seems very simimlar to Atkins.

So this past Monday I decided to go back onto Atkins for a few weeks and
then will switch over to SB for the healthier version of the diet. After 3
full days, I'm already feeling better, am in ketosis and feeling positive.
I've been walking about 1/2 mile after dinner with dog at night.

I've been eating 1 fried egg with leftover kielbasa for breakfast. Lunch
has been a LC salad and a diet coke. dinner has been either grilled chicken
or steak with some steamed cabbage and last night I had grilled some scrod
and encjoyed some crab legs with some steam cauliflower. I've been working
quite hard at not snacking, as that is my downfall.

I've got to work at making this a lifestyle, rather than a diet - however
things come along - parties, travel, drinking, football tailgating. Makes
it tough to stick with it. for instance, I'm planning a trip to Amsterdam
with my wife in December - - will try to remain good, but expect to slip
some - afterall, it's Holland - - not like their known for thier slimming
    diet.

Looks like a good group of folks here - Hopefully I can get the support to
keep it going. Thanks for listening.

Consider sticking to what's working for you now....changing down the road

    Good luck.

    Sandy,

That all sounds great, but something you might consider...examine
whether snacking itself has been your downfall or what you were
snacking on / how you were snacking was the problem.

Multiple sources suggest that "snacking" is actually an important part
of best controlling appetite and maintaining metabolism. That is,
eating 5 or 6 times per day versus 3, evens out appetite and keeps
your system from swinging to extremes; keeps it "rolling along." Of
course, you'll want to balance things out in terms of the overall
calorie range you're shooting for; i.e., adjust the size of the 3 main
    meals.

The thing is to select the right kinds of things to snack on and to do
    it in the right amounts.

  4. What you have described is not the "first two weeks" of the Atkins diet. Do
    you have the book?

At any rate, one way to stop the snacking on cookies and other junk is to
not have them in the house. I solved that problem by keeping almonds around.
Pour out some, say to yourself: "This is my snack" and when they're gone,
stop eating. Some people say they stall on the carbonated drinks. You say
you drink diet coke. I believe Atkins frowns on caffeine in drinks--at least
the first two weeks. That is one reason why I said you aren't following the
Atkins diet. Other reasons include the vegetables you are eating (at least
    in the first two weeks).

Basically, the Atkins diet gets you weaned off of sugar. It also controls
high glycemic carbs, but in my estimation, the first two weeks are to break
    the sugar habit.

By snacking I really meant pigging out with cookies and chips during the
late evenings. I am generally not hungry during the day, so I don't require
any snacks to even things out.

    Thanks.

  11. Get creative with tailgating.
Shiskabob, Sate', other stick meat stuff. For a full assortment, check
    out
The Barbeque Bible by Stephen Raichlen. Not all LC, but easily over 80%
    is modifiable to low carb.

    Drinking:
Drink hard hard (Old School drinks, like Gimlets) or drink light beer
(Mic Ultra, Miller Lite, etc). Drink wine in moderation. With the
expanded carb range on SB, you should be able to fit a glass or two in.

    Travel:
As noted: Keep it simple. Salads, meats, cheeses, and since your SB,
    fruits.

    Parties:
I pre-eat for parties. Eat a little before, where I can control, then I
can make good decisions at the party.

Snacking is just making the commitment to yourself to cut it out or do
    it smartly.

    Good luck and good speed.

I lost 60 pounds on Atkins while drinking my Diet Mountain Dew.
I guess I was lucky except for not doing maintenance & gaining more
back. I'm back on & have to realize that it is a way of life & that I
have to read the rest of the book.

  15. "Drinking:

(Mic Ultra, Miller Lite, etc). Drink wine in moderation. With the
expanded carb range on SB, you should be able to fit a glass or two in.
    "

Why is wine the only drink that requires the moderation modifier?
There are lots of dry wines that are about 3g per serving, about the
same as a LC beer. And I would caution to be careful with light beer,
there is a wide variation in how many carbs they contain, read the
label. For example, a Coors Light has over twice the carbs as a Mich
Ultra. Also, "old school" is not a very good description of acceptable
mixed drinks. An "old fashioned", for example, could be called an old
school drink and it's hard liquor plus sugar. A better descripiton is
any mixed drink that contains pure distilled spirits, (gin, vodka, rum,
whiskey) and mixers that are LC.

But perhaps the best advice for someone who's failed many times at LC
before, is to give up alcohol all together, or at least limit it to an
occasional special occasion, until you are close to maintenance. One
big problem with alcohol is that one drink can lead to five, especially
at a party or bar. Alcohol usually makes me more hungry and being
hungry in those kinds of environments, combined with alcohol, can
quickly lead to eating the wrong foods.
